My wife's grandmother takes EPLA to California all the time to visit her sister. As far as I know this is the only accident they've had with fatalities.

Bus probably hit the pipes at 75-80mph. Their buses aren't governed.

Anyone of us can say what "we would have done". All the talk about what you "would have done" means nothing when you're there and it's happening. We all don't know because when you're in the moment, nothing comes into play. It's like people saying what they would've done in one of these mass shootings. It's not that simple. It's not Hollywood acting. Nobody reacts cool and calmly every time. RIP to those who died.

From the pictures of the accident scene in the article it looks like the eastbound flatbed jackknifed and rolled into the median, with long metal pipes scattering across both east and west bound lanes. The pipes looked to be about 6-8" in diameter (maybe larger). Since they were metal pipes I'm sure they were very heavy and would be a formidable obstacle for anyone to just try to hang on and plow through them, especially if they were bouncing and coming at you at 70 mph.

I'm trying to fathom driving at 2:00 am and suddenly having steel pipe PROJECTILES coming at me all of a sudden. Talk about an adrenaline rush...

The reports now say that the bus did hit the load of pipes before sliding down the embankment.

If the load was secure, how could these pipes come off? Even if he jack knifed, I'm still trying to figure out how they slid out...Any flat bedders have any comments on this? PS, I'm aware things such as steel beams or sheets of steel can and have slipped forward. BUT, it looks like the entire load spilled.

You jerk a trailer violently enough, I don't care if the world's best secured that load. Doesn't matter. Force doesn't care if you did a good job.
