40 foot rule on a 48 foot spread axle.

I have only been given a warning once and it was on CA 58 at the Mojave scale house but the officer was cool about it because I told him I stretched out crossing 80 after I got empty and was still empty. He said since you're empty I'll give you a warning and you need to fix the dragging chain. (Chain was a center section of a tire chain I guess flung up and some how hooked the bottom side of my bottom passenger step)
