ok heres my problem. I currently run a hardcore gameing laptop. but it runs hot from cig outlet.. I just wanna know .. if its ok to run a 9 foot approved right wattage cord. from something like side box. for 2-4 hrs.
not really wanting the whole mess of a 1500 watt just a 400watt / peak 800.. hook up put away.. not continued use .. really at a lose.. lotta inverter talk on here saying drill wholes protect with tubeing.. but that seems to be permentantly fixed.. thx derek

If your not running "AT LEAST" 1000watt Inverter your wasting your time as well as money.
Low buck is Low Buck, drop the coin "once" and run what ever you want from there on out.
    Or spend,spend,spend on continual upgrades . . . . .

1500 watts and you can rule the world!!(or most any household appliance made)

I agree with that 100%,that is what I have and can use ANYTHING I have along,microwave,etc..My question is,why do T.S. sell the HUGE Mega Watt inverters?,I mean, what would anyone need one of those for?-Unless to supply power to 5 big trucks alongside of you..? To the OP's question, when I got my inverter a coupe years ago,I did hook it up to the batteries until I had time to connect it the "right" way..

First of all, be sure your company will allow you to connect an inverter. Some carriers will not permit this and can fire the driver for tampering with company equipment. In the event the carrier does not prohibit you from doing so (or you own the truck) then be sure to get a decent sized inverter. Minimum 1500 watt. A 1500 watt will be sufficient for your laptop, an onboard refrigerator, a microwave, etc. If you intend to watch tv and add a gaming system at a later date then go for a 2500 watt. Install it in the side box closest to the batteries and pull back the rubber floor mat in the side box. You will find pre-drilled holes in some trucks that will be large enough for the wires to go to the underside of the cab and into the battery box. Wrap the cords in electrical tape or if the holes are large enough use a section of hose, cut a slice in the hose and then slide the hose over the wires. This will help to prevent chafing and grounding out the power supply.

I have used a 1500 watt inverter for a couple of years now and have had no problems.

The thing about inverters is you want to keep the battery cables short as possible. Under 4' is ideal and then run you and extension cord from it.

The Cobra 800 watt has cables supplied with battery clips. You could hook straight to the batteries and run you a 6-12' extention cord inside.

Buy you the factory 12V plugin for your laptop, it shouldn't be a problem. Them ones you buy on ebay uses thinner wires and insulation and aren't near as good as the ones you buy from HP ,Dell,....

Also you need to put the laptop on a flat surface so the fan can do it's job. If you have it on your lap or on your bunk it will overheat. I have one of them TV dinner folding tables I use for my laptop. Pete 387's don't have any work surfaces or slide outs like a Volvo.

go big or go home.... just like said above the smaller inverters don't hold up... i run a 1500 watt cobra for over 3 years now and has never failed...but as said above make sure the carrier will allow to have one its not worth your job to play a game IMO
