Location is key! I am local to our rail yard and customers. I pull trailers to and from the rail yards. $1000 base pay for M-F and they want us to work weekends as well, at $200 a day. We can take weekends off as long as there are enough volunteers to cover the weekend loads.

I am home nightly. Maybe out overnight once or twice in 30 days...

Oh, editing to add. I got this gig at about 16 months from start. I did 11 months regional. Then about 5 months of a dedicated route before moving to this position.

next time a "Primo" driver says anything like that, ask them to show you is "bottom line net paycheck", then ALL his road expenses, then ALL HIS HOURS......we know WE MAKE OUT FAR MORE THAN THEY EVER WILL.....
if a "Primo" driver actually KNEW ANYTHING, they would actually KNOW they are idiots for being a L/O...!!!

"vocational jobs" such as this or cement trucks or dump trucks, garbage trucks, can be good paying jobs.

it's just that too many wannabe's and newbies are lambasted into thinking that OTR or other local Class A driving jobs are the choice jobs forever and ever.....(freaking schools)

yes we do when hours worked and road expenses are figured in but mostly they acted like they wouldnt get out of bed for $45-50k a year--just not enough money for being a "wage slave" and having a boss.
in reality my boss never bothers me as long as the customers are happy and i get to deal with them myself to set up scheduling and plan my day out and run as i please.
i hear from O/O and L/O a lot that "i dont have a boss" but we all do and i prefer to deal with a boss that has me home at night at this point in my life.

just beat on every door you can find and while the first local job may not be what you want keep on looking because there are always better jobs out there if you want to work hard at it.

I believe Fedex freight in Columbia has city openings. Try talking to the manager there

food service drivers (at Agar) work for the peanuts they earn, and it is back breaking work. Agar here in Massachusetts, just never takes down the "CDL Driver help wanted sign". they are constantly hiring, what does that tell you.>??

that a company that HAS TO constantly hire, is a company to STAY AWAY from..!!!!

ALL of those food service companies involve a lot of back breaking work. It is amazing the number of places that still have their storage either in the basement, or on the second floor!

That was one of the (many) things that I liked about the LTL that I retired from. They flatly prohibited their drivers from transporting anything on stairs. And into residences, (other than a garage.)

Folks would buy appliances from the local Home Depot, or other such store, but instead of the store delivering the appliance, they would order a "drop ship" from the distributor. And the salesman would "assure" the customer that the delivery company would bring it into their house and put it where they wanted it. :biggrin_25512: Made for a lot of angry customers, when they found out they had been lied to.

Hmm I just found something local myself, granted it took my best friend passing along the info that I am to be getting my cdl soon, but it can be done.

I was looking for a local job before and during trucking school and couldn't find one. All of the places that didn't require experience (coke, pepsi, bud, miller, etc) had applications coming in from people with experience, so I had to go get mine OTR. Glad I did it, but I'm not with a girl or family yet. Was easier for me than others, and I know that. But after 8 months OTR I was able to get a union job with a grocery distributor. Pretty solid work especially after Hurricane Issac. I was working upwards of 60 hrs for the last two weeks which equals huge paychecks.
