I don't even know where to start. So let me start to ramble.

First- drove a 24' straight truck 89-91, 91 to present, work as a LEO.

Second- Getting to the point that its time to pull the pin(retire) seeing the direction things are going. After much research etc. I'm exploring/researching getting back into a truck.

Here is some thoughts. Need to make-up lost income, Health Insurance coverage will cost approx. $1200 per month. What I'm thinking is driving school then attempting to get a job with Schneider or JB Hunt to gain necessary experience (Local Craigslist ads all seem to want 1-2 yrs experience). After that?? I am not sure. Local Intermodal? I do live near 2 rail yards.

Need some feed back- Thoughts- direction- I'd appreciate any sharing of wisdom.

    Thanks in advance.

You're on the right track with CDL school.
Now, for the good money right out of school, go with hazmat/tankers. Several companies will hire you the day you graduate. Some require graduates from certain schools and some don't care as long as it's 160 hr. school.
You should make $60K+ as a beginner in hazmat/tankers.
Here's a list of companies that hire new CDL grads:

    Trimac Transportation
    Superior Carriers
    Schneider Bulk
    Tidewater Transit
    CTL Transportation
    SVTN
    Groendyke Transport

If you see one you especially like, call and ask which school they hire from in your area. Trimac and Superior have a list of schools they recruit from.

You will need hazmat/tanker endorsements plus TWIC card. Goggle for nearest TWIC office to you. TWIC is for entering sea ports, military bases, chemical plants.

Welcome to the trucking industry mrf6781, there is a few former/retired LEO's on this forum, good luck with your new career, although trucking has been very good to me, if I could turn the clocks back? I might not have made the decision you're making now, best of luck
