May be going to jump into flat bedding. I need advice on what trailer to start with. I know the ropes of straps and chains OK, but what features are most important in a trailer.? I prefer a step to a flat, but am open. I book my own loads under my own numbers, and run the western USA. I always hauled a dry van. Is the 53 extra space worth the weight penalty? I don't know yet what I will be hauling so I just want to make basic preparations. My tractor weight is 19,200 low on fuel. I will just use the boards to get going and then look for better stuff. Thanks.

Weight is the biggest thing it seems but that comes with it's own drawbacks. Probably the best thing is a 53' all aluminum with a sliding rear axle. This would get you legal for both Commiefornia and Canada. There is maybe 2k difference between the 48' and 53' You have a pretty light truck so I would say once you get all your gear and fill the tanks you would be right around 32k full of fuel. With a 53 you could have an 11' upper deck and still have room on the lower deck for a container.

My 2016 T680 fully fueled with an empty 53' combination flatbed weighs in at 31160 with all gear and me in the drivers seat.
    If that helps

Great, thats very helpful. I am used to running partial fuel most of the time for the dry van work I have been doing. I always seem heavy on the tractor drives, so fuel is a way to lighten it. I have an APU so that hurts a bit there too. I will need the sliding rear axle for sure. What about a lift axle and which one to lift?

You should be able to legal 50,000lbs. I kept my truck/trailer tare at 30,000 or less

I don't see any reason to waste money on a 53 when you can have up to 4 feet rear over hang on a 48 without a permit but 0 on a 53

If it were me I would just buy a 48, I can't justify the extra weight of a 53. You are allowed up to 4 feet rear over hang on a 48 but none on a 53 without a permit besides that how much space do you have from back of the sleeper to your first drive
