When I'm trying to slide my 5th wheel into another hole, do you lower your landing gear?

It helps if you are loaded and want to slide your 5th wheel to drop the landing gear. It takes some of the load off the 5th wheel. It helps to put some kind of lube on the sliding surface also. I use motor oil. Grease builds up gathers dirt and crap and seems to get everywhere you do not want it. Penetrating oil will work too. It does not hurt to spray the dogs that hold the 5th wheel in place on the track. If the dogs do not jump out when you flip the switch in the cab, set trailer brakes, release the tractor brakes and gently rock the truck. If they still do not release smack them with a hammer. If that does not work there is a good chance the cylinder that releases the dogs is shot, then you have to replace the cylinder.

Also, once the landing gear is lowered dump the air bags if you have the option. I'll make the 5th wheel slide even easer as it will still be locked to the kingpin but will not ne holding any of the trailer weight.

But it's not going to slide at all irregardless, if the latch pins don't retract when you "unlock" the 5th wheel. Make a visual inspection and insure they all 4 look like that have retracted. Like the trailer, sometimes you may have to buck and rock forwards and backwards until they all release. They stay stationary so long, the sometimes get really stuck especially on older trucks.

I use dish soap to slide my 5th wheel. Use it to slide tandems as well.
