It's a long story, I'm pretty sure I've posted it already. If not the run down is this:

I was offered conditional employment at .32cpm as long as I passed the drug test. I did, then they brought up per diem the 3rd week. They said it was optional. I wanted to decline it right then and there. They said I had to wait till I was assigned a DBL. That first day was crazy didn't request the sheet to sign but did the following week. I signed it. He faxed it while I was standing there. Weeks of complaining later I call payroll. They claim to never have gotten it. And refuse to reimburse me. DBL remembers facing it and all. Just a joke if you ask me. If your going to force people on it you offer employment at that rate giving them the opportunity to decline of they want. They're doing it the other way around. It's more principle than $300. But I'm mad about the $300 too!!! Lol

Sorry, I remember reading that part. Just reminiscing of what I thought I remembered during orientation. Both times Ive started SNI I was the only only experienced driver in the group, so I was always having something different done, bit now that you mention it, I beleive it was 30 days and not 90 and they claimed to havenever gotten mine either

Not very surprised this has happened before lol. They're prompt about taking money out of my check. But really slow about giving it back to me when it's mine. I wonder how much money they are being floated by company drivers. Even if you take out the advance money get are sure to get it back right away. But when you claim an expense it takes at the very least 2 weeks to get that money back.

According to their website under FAQ, the per diem is 90 days. It does not say if you can get out of it in less time. My questions are, what is it, and how is it calculated? Why would someone want it or not want it.

Per diem is a deduction the Government allows drivers to claim for everyday they are away from home at the end of the year.

Most companies will calculate it daily for drivers and do it based on mileage you run each day for a fee.

It makes companies money thru them charging usually .02 cpm and it saves them on their tax liability side such as matching fica, ss etc. Also saves them on workers comp.

It lowers a drivers w2 taxable income as you earn instead of at tax time.

It is something you need to discuss with your tax advisor on which way benefits you.

to expand on a point shown above....

if you ran a very short mileage day, you would be leaving a deduction on the table. we are now allowed 80% of $64 A DAY for a full 24 hrs away from home and a smaller %for the partial days (out of and back to the house).

I'm not sure I did it right on my own but taking the deduction myself I had 17k deducted from my taxable income. I used turbo tax. for the kind of money we are talking about , imo its worth a sit down qith an advisor and having a pro do the taxes for filing. just keep all your nonfood receipts and a journal of days out. I use a pocket calender from my bank, writing city and state on the appropriate day.

The fact they push it like its the best thing since sliced bread and charge the driver 2 cpm should be all you need to know. If your objective is to have less taxes taken from each check you can simply claim more exemptions,

So, I made a bonehead mistake. I wasn't planning on coming home this weekend. Especially since I was just routed home last weekend for the holiday. But they said I was overdue for some training thing. They sent me a Qualcomm message with the date and time, what to wear, how many hours to have and so on. So, I get home last night and went to church with the family. Something I haven't done since starting. It was cool. Got home and the wife says "what time you have to be there?" I said 9 am. She said "I thought you told me 7am?" I said "no it's 9am." I go and get there at 8am. Get some breakfast. 9am comes and goes. 930 rolls around and I see a training guy walking around. I ask him if he's doing the training. He said yes. I tell him my name. He said I was scheduled for 7am. My DBL is in so I go into her and she looks it up. Sure enough. 7am. Doh. But as she was looking it up I told her that I thought it was strange cause my text said 0910. In the message she had saved it had 09/10. As the date. Then had the times of 07:00-11:00. I don't know how I got that all messed up. But I don't remember my Qualcomm message showing the / slash thing. Pretty ticked at myself for messing that up. I pick on them for it all the time. Is this a Schneider learned condition? I'm really worried now. Should I see a Dr? Is there medication? Does the medication side effect induce rectal bleeding? Nooooo!!!!

Meh. So you F'd up. 9:10 is kind of a random time to set an appointment but it's not the first time a detail has been over looked. I'm more concerned that they had to tell you (or any employee, not picking on you) what to wear to the training.
