Yours haven't. That's a good thing. Some idiot is going to complain that his tweaked radio squealed when he plugged the Mic in after turning the adjustment inside the Mic. They'll be wondering why their experience was different than yours. I figured I'd point it out before it happens.
It's a simple fix. Wiring in plug needs to be rearranged.

Bought the astatic 636. Waaay better than what my 880 came with. I think my mic was funky to begin with.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

So Im guessing you found the 4 pin to 6 pin adapter? Cant go wrong with the 636, it sounds good on most radios, high powered and stock 4 watt radios. I have found with the 880/980 stock mic, in order to boost modulation, take cover off and remove piece of adhesive cheesecloth that covers hole and mic will sound better, not as muffled.

Yup. Adapter was in the original box. My wife organizes all that stuff. She knew where it was. That just amazes me

I’m a complete novice with the CB tech. Can that mic give me better range. It really seems like it.

Range is really dependant on radios wattage and more importantly the efficiency of your antenna system, a quality mic will boost your modulation somewhat and make it crystal clear, as long as radio hasnt been hacked or improperly tuned.

Was tempted to open radio just to see if it is 1st generation or 2nd generation board. Would like to have it checked to see what modulation level is and ssb setting, already checked carrier and it is right at 4 watts, would like to have modulation set around 80 to 85 % ( may already be) and ssb at 12 watts, once again may already be at 12 watts.
