What do you do when your delivory is NOT on a main road?

 

Then you get good directions.

 

Nope. The correct answer is "A bunch"!

 

Two summers ago we were working around the clock in shifts on a bridge replacements running dump trucks. That was the only thing we could turn around on that small road with about 4 pull ups.

Anyhow, about 15 miles before the road closure there was an electronic billboard that read "Road closed at mile marker 17" and also gave the dates. At MM17 there was a barricade across the road and then another one about 3 miles past that.

I was coming out from the bridge after dumping my load of rock and came across a CRE truck heading the other way. So this idiot had driven past the electronic billboard AND around 2 barricades to get that far. I asked what he was doing and he said he was going to White Sulphur Springs. Then I asked how he could miss the billboard and 2 barricades. Just got a dumb look in response.

Told him the only place to turn around was about a mile back where we were loading the dump trucks. It took him 2 hours to get turned around.

If you take US 12 east from Townsend, MT this was in the canyon you get into just after leaving Townsend before you get up on the flats..... Relatively flat that is.... LOL If you have ever been there, it is a relatively narrow road with a lot of winding corners in it.

 

I thought maybe if signs were ten feet wide and twenty feet high trucks might actually see the signs but cre missing that electronic billboard is proof that won't work.

 

Easier said than done. I have called customers for directions from the highway and sometimes they have no idea. I asked one place if they were north or south of the expressway, the guy said he didn't know, wtf.

 

Me too,one lady I doubt she even knew her name without looking it up.I was like less then a mile.I called for directions everything was I dont know.she was real clueless.I said you live here and you can't direct me in.I'll connect you to the receiving dept.he gave me directions.I said to him sir how does your receptionist make it to work everyday without help,he laughed.

 

Back in the 80's, in the transition from when you could get reliable directions from any gas station attendant, I was trying to work my way to Boston from New Hampshire. I stopped at a gas station about 30 miles from Boston, to ask the way to Boston...

"What's the best way to get to Boston?"

(Blank stares) "Uh, Boston?"

Turns out none of the three behind the counter had been farther from home than their immediate neighborhood. They didn't have a clue.
