The megas are only part of the problem. The entire process to obtain and test for CDL is another part of the problem, also, smaller start-up companies and private carriers have a hard time attracting well-qualified drivers and resort to hiring whatever comes through the door to fill an immediate need and as long as they can produce a "valid CDL" and seem to be in fair health, they are "good to go" as far as they are concerned.

I used to do an annual trek to the Mecca of rock climbing in Yosemite every spring in the early '80's to do big walls. I climbed all over North America, Europe, and Asia, but never in the Himalaya.
From the perspective of this thread my take is that drivers get in over their heads and get tunnel vision from fear.
Stop.
Take a breath.
Put on the 4 ways.

I bet this Amish female truck driver would have the sense to stay off the bridge.

Well as an O/O. My and any other insurance carrier wants "2 yrs experience" for them to cover a driver.
Mega's are self insured, so they can put the 5 week driver into a trainer position to train the 4 day old driver.
Finding a qualified driver, is already in a good job. You need to have deep pockets to whoooo said good drivers away.
Hopefully the economy's going to pick back up, and all those noob-drivers will go back to their regular jobs. -
Experience is the best and most thorough teacher.
I thought I saw a picture with a clearance marked on that bridge but I have seen so many it could have been one of those.
Normally, low clearances are marked. -
WTF?
If I laid around in a bar for 3 days popped up on Jack and crank, and then climbed in a truck and made it far enough to come to that bridge... there would have been something inside of me saying, "Hot ####! I wonder if this thing will make it!"
But stone-cold sober?bottomdumpin Thanks this. -
Don't know if it's been mentioned but this driver told the officer she didn't know how much weight she was carrying.doesn't matter even empty she would have been over six tons.another example of someone that is far from ready for this industry
