Ok boys...so you're the experts and no one else could help me so here goes...
My husband graduated from trucking school Sept. 17th and has been working temp driving a dump truck for a construction company, which I hear by the trucking world standards, counts for nothing, experience and mileage-wise.
May Trucking in CA has offered him a start date on Nov. 29th (OTR) and said he HAD to take it or leave it since he has/had 60 days from the date he graduated to get hired on with a TRUCKING company. The thing is, he's got a sweet temp job with a trucking company beginning Nov 30th (working 25 days straight for the holidays and the pay is very nice).
He'd asked the recruiter if she can hang tight until he gets back. He'd be free to start with May on 12/27 with no problem. She says no, start date is 11/29 or he will need 6 mos experience to apply with them again.
The reason why he didn't go OTR right after he graduated is because of me: Im 8 mos pregnant with our first son and he wants to be around to see him born.
He does have a 6mo temp job to come home to (not in trucking at all), but when that job is over, he is going to be back at square one with all companies wanting 6 mos experience and he will have a HUGE gap to answer for.
So what gives, boys? It's a tough decision to make all around...any help is welcome and appreciated![]()

Well i know some companies want a refresher after so long but if he has been driving a commercial vehicle then that shouldnt be a problem have him look into other companies and see what they say.

A wife? A new baby? Hmmmm..... Still a tough decision! But if I had people depending on me, I would take the stable job over those temp projects. But in the end the decision is all his & yours. I guess this is a test to determine how responsible he plans to be in the future. -
I'll let "the boys" answer this one !!

It IS a tough decision isn't it REDD? Be OTR in a perm and stable position and run the risk of missing out on the birth of his first born son OR keep with the temp work for the next month or two and then hit the ground running?
You're absolutely right Kenworth900, I hadn't even thought about the refresher course.
And 123456, I meant no disrespect.
Funny ain't it?? I can know SO much about SO much but when it comes to the life of a trucker, his career and how to be a supportive wife, I know jack squat! That's why I look to ones that I know will have good solid answers. Thanks all -
Then I guess he just picked the wrong time to try to go trucking.
LadyHawk0717 Thanks this. -
Or I picked the wrong time to get knocked up!

Well, Folks, I can tell you if you want to get into trucking, you need to put everything else on the back burner and make trucks your first priority. That includes Wifey, births, family, home time, Grandma, Kiddies functions, Holidays and everything else. Too many people seem to want to get into trucking, but don't want to make any effort to do what it takes to succeed.
REDD Thanks this. -
i hate to say it but it is true of many trucking companies that have been to my school. they tell my students you got x number of days once you graduate to come to work, otherwise you WILL HAVE TO go back to school and not just for a refresher course, but the FULL course all over again. this was true of the Rohel(sp?) trucking company. they have a 60 day, no "if's and's or but's" about it...you either show up when we call you, or you go to the back of the line, and if time runs out....??? you GO BACK TO SCHOOL...!! and i can assure you, that time WILL RUN OUT.
so like was mentioned from someone else, sometimes you just HAVE TO put all else on the back burner and "git-r-done".....life will be there waiting, it'll only be a short time believe it or not before things get back to normal again.
a temp job that last x number of days is good, but then what....???
what if he doesn't get any more calls from the temp agency.....???
that could DEFINITELY happen.....because work will slow down after christmas. -
so in todays economy with people losing jobs left and right, people standing in lines to apply for jobs that are well below their skill level, this question seems absurd. it sucks that he'll miss the child being born, but it would suck a lot more if the child starting missing meals because dad wasn't working.
