I have 7 months OTR experience. I am not making any money. I have my hazmat and tankers. Will it hurt me to leave before I hit my 1yr mark at my company? I applied at Waste Managemnt as a driver and have an interview this week. I'd make much more, but don't know if going local too soon will hurt my chances of furthering my career in the future. Many jobs say 1yr otr required. WM is local and may be looked down on I fear.

sometimes the OTR requirement is just to keep drivers out there taking advantage of them
many different jobs out there just go find the one that fits
you wont know until you find it
    like looking for lost keys
they are in the last place you look
because then you quit looking :biggrin_25519:

What do you want to do in the future? If you just want to worki local then take the trash truck job, If you want to drive 18 wheeler local then stay and get your year. The trash truck job will not count for a lot of places. A year will open up a lot more opportunities.

I don't want to do OTR. Hope to find a local job I can make good money at and eventually find a company I'm happy with to stay until I retire

I was offered a local CDL job hauling alcohol, I won't have to do any unloading, a lumper would be in the truck with me. It pays $14/hr to start and I would be bumped up to $18 after 120 days. It would be a big truck not a straight truck. Is that good pay for a local driver with my experience. Its less pay than WM, but I'd still keep up with my semi driving experience and still make more than I am now. I have only made 14k BEFORE taxes OTR in 7 month. Just battling with if I should stick It out 5 more months and live on PBJs or take a risk with local now. Also I am worried job hopping would make a bad impression later.

14k doing OTR over 7 months!??!?!?! Holy #^&**$(#@!

I was in almost as bad of a situation starting out at .26 CPM and getting screwed on miles. I left with around 6-7 months experience and went to Crete for .43 CPM and I have around $1200 a week when out 7 days.
OTR going to another OTR company wasn't difficult for me, dunno about local because I didn't try.
I don't wanna lose out on all those tax benefits of being OTR , plus driving an hour to work to drive just to drive an hour back home doesn't appeal to me.

Yeah and I have my fiance with me so ita just my income OTR. We don't have many bills but we have debts to pay. Struggling really bad. I make .31cpm but truck always breaks down. Sad thing is I probably could hit my year coasting by just sitting in the shop. We're are sacrificing for our future so we can go to a local job somewhere. We are okay with OTR, but the money i make doesn't make the life worth it. I'm all for paying my dues of being a rookie, but this is a bit extreme.

If you go with Waste Management and then later want a Class-A job, it would be nothing more than a refresher course at worst.

The positive about the tanker job is it would set you up for local fuel hauling or chemical hauling in the near future.

If you and your girl friend are patient, the tanker job will lead to a much higher standard of living in the future.

WM is a good company, not doubt about it. But, will it provide what you and girl friend and possibly a family later, the standard of living you want to provide? Sure, WM will be a steady, reliable income and never have to worry about being unemployed; people and companies will always create garbage that needs to be disposed of.

So, look at Waste Management as a career or the tanker job as a stepping stone to something better.

WM and tanker, both good choices, but with different positive outcomes.

Try MBM food service in Fort Worth and or Lewisville...you also have McLane food service in Arlington and Maines food-service in Terrel...you could also try some of the LTL companies in the Dallas-Fort Worth area like all dominion, FedEx freight, Estes, or Saia...those jobs would have you home every night or at worst home every other night but you would make much better money and home frequently
