I started with U.S Xpress fresh out of school thinking this would be a good beginner company, soon did I realize this is where people try to get to in thier career. This is about my experience and my opinion only, I am not trying to recruit, I do not want your name or do I want you to have my Id # to give to your recruiter.

I went through a three day orientation at Tunnel Hill, GA which was a very organized experiance. They put you up in a hotel all three days and you get breakfast at the hotel and lunch at the terminal. If you make it past day 1 of orientaition your good to go, the drug tests, the agility, blood pressure and eye exams are what take 25% of applicants out everytime.

When you are Hired on without experience you will wait on a trainer, hotel is paid and you are paid $58 per day of waiting, and $30 per day if your trainer has home time. If you are experienced you will go straight to first seat driver, Issued a truck and be on your way.

There are horror storys about being out with a trainer, believe them. Mine was not so bad but we didn't get along all that well. 120hrs of training can be done in 3 weeks but can take much longer depending on how hard your trainer runs. If you can help it request not to be sent with a o/o, you will run as team to make his wallet fat and you will suffer the lack of training.

Throughout my travels since I upgraded I was sent to manditory team for 8 weeks with another newbie, and we have had our fair share of issues. When have any issue at all there is a phone number to call and let me tell you, the hardest person to get a hold of is your FM and that is a walk in the park compared to other companys. In the 2 weeks of teaming I have had to deal with Break Down, Fuel Department, Permits, Claims, Human Resorces, Saftey and the terminal manager. The way these people treat you every step of the way has blown me away. They put your problems first and fast track everything to get you a solution.

Ever had to get a permit? How about having the permit faxed to your location less than 5min from when you dialed the #. Ever called break down? Need a mud flap, trailer roof re-fiberglassed, air tank welded back on, maybe a body panel? I was always routed to the nearest Petro or TA and never waited more than an hour for the work to be done and back on the road.

I had a saftey concern, without going into detail it became top priority. I was in the terminal the next morning sitting in a office with HR being asked " what can I do for you". That day I was seperated from my team mate, given a greyhound ticket and on my way to recover a truck to go solo.

I have worked for other corporate companys before bigger than U.S Xpress and was never treated so well, especially considering I haven't been there long enough to even prove myself.

Make your choice and everyones experiance will be different, as far as I am concerned I was lucky to get in with them.

Thanks for the info. One question - you mentioned an agility test. What exactly is that? Are we talking about the standard being able to climb in and out of a trailer, work the clutch and carry 30 lb. loads, or something different?

i saw a post on agility tests for conway truckload. i have only had one medical test (by an old dr of mine) that required a agility. also, i know conway drivers that did not have an agility test as described below.

basically, it is a physical test (for example: step test - 15 inch step to a metered beat ... step up, step down, step up, step down) that last a certain amount of time. your pulse is taken before the test for a baseline. after the test, your pulse is taken again. then after a short time, it is taken again. so you have baseline, exercise and recovery pulse rates. there are other tests that are physical to simulate the activity a driver may face, squat, weights, et cetera.

calculate your maximum heart rate. note: there are different rates of coming up with this number... usually 200-220 MINUS your age. that is around your maximum... now, most testers will require you to be between 60-80% of that number after the test.

i have read that if your pulse exceeds the maximum at any time, you might as well back over EVERY cone you can, you are being sent home...

i have heard that agility tests can be as easy as drop - hook trailer, move truck...

if entering the driving profession, it is best to ask for details prior to getting that "go home" from the dr. as i get my bp in check, i am walking to loose that extra weight to help with any possible agility test.

hope this helps, also, anyone with agility details, please add as i am curious to different companies "agility" testing. thanks.

oh, what i forgot to add...

don't drink caffeine before the test. breathe through your mouth, deep, relaxed and regular. continue that breathing for the recovery rate. drink plenty of water for that day also.

For USX the agility test is a crouch and walk waddle for like 7 feet, carry a box with 70lbs of weight in it and walk it down the hall a back and put on shelf three times while wearing a pulse monitor and you have to press this thing against the wall for like 100lbs of force

You gotta be kidding me . Ive been driving for 21yrs you have a big surprise coming if you think any trucking company gives two $hts about you. I hope it wont be a big let down for you the first time you have a family emergency and they tell you what you wanna here why they send you the opposite way. By the way if they care so much for you why dont they pay you flat rate for your miles like 98 % of the companies do. Sliding pay scale is the first sign of a bad company because they have cheated you out of an honest wage. Good trucking companies pay practical miles for the most part . Good luck with US Express like most drivers youll be looking for another company in about a year if your smart. Otherwise you dont have a clue. My Advice is nobody cares about you except you . Especially a trucking company remember that

Actually I think his post should be required reading for all new people coming into this job with recruiter fueled visions of "the high pay highway",of "being a paid tourist", and all the other smoke that recruiter's blow up their #####. Face it my friend, there's a reason that there is about a 100% turnover ratio at most of these companies. And there is a reason that these companies have to employ dozens of "professional fecal spewers" just to get people in the door.....:biggrin_25525:
