What happens if you worked less than 70 hrs in a 8 day period ? Can you work the remaining hours on the 9th day or do you have to still do a 34 reset ?

Restart is not mandatory. As long as you have hours to run you ca work 365 days a year.

But your on duty hours count in that 70. So if you drive 10 hours, and are on duty for fueling, inspections, etc., for another hour, that's 11 hours worked that day.

Yes you can it's called rollover hours. Say you did a 34 and left out Sunday and used 8 hours that day. You will get that back the next week on Monday if you don't do a reset the next weekend

I've routinely run on recap hours for weeks at a time. Sometimes I might have only three hours on my 70 with seven hours coming back at midnight. BUT, if that's enough to deliver a load, secure another load, then sit until midnight to make the US economy function, then that's what I do.
Normally if I am running under recap hours it's not that tight. I might typically have 10 hours to start the day and about 7-10 hours coming back at midnight. The hours to start the day could often be much more than 10. In those cases I rarely sweat the recap details. -
The 34 is not mandatory to sit. It is useful to pull a 34 if you are in a nice spot and want to get caught up with your own rest etc after a difficult week. We did not have a 34 in our time. All we had was recaps. Sometimes we take a day off each week so we stayed caught up with the necessary things.
When you are close to your 70 hours be very very careful. They will have no problem putting you OOS if they so much as suspect any violation during your last 8 days worked. Technology today can tell you to the tenth of a mile from any point to another point anywhere on the USA etc in a few moments.
There were times I did not bother to get fuel until the new work day started after midnight because for a variety of reasons at times. Usually when the truck was low on fuel and to go spend the 15 minutes to fuel it on logs would have put me over the 70. So shut it off and wait until midnight heh.Lepton1 Thanks this. -
