Was that true in the 80s when there was guys pushing triple digits? It's not like a 75 mph rated tire is going to just fly apart at 85.

 

Gotta have the right truck setup to be fairly comfortable at 65+mph. My truck is extremely comfortable at 70mph. Stretched out pete, 1500rpm and she is just happy as can be. Eastern Oregon, southern Idaho, Montana all just fine at 70 and yes I still get passed by faster trucks.

 

I'm just saying that there's a max speed stamped into the tire. That's the manufacturer's rating. I also know that you *can* buy higher rated tires for a truck.

I'll also confess that I have pushed this truck, loaded on flat(ish) ground, to see what it was capable of. Triple digits would not be a pipe dream.

I run same speed 62-68 and feel like thats enough for the big rig ....
Used to drive 4wheelers at 159 and 132 ...and suspended

That is one crash, which is an anecdotal stat. People have been killed in crashes where the speed was 20 mph. Statistically across the board, the percentage of crashes that are fatal increases with higher speeds. That is a fact.

So, if a vehicle that was in another lane and slightly ahead of you spins out in front of you, increased following distance of the vehicle ahead of you and in your lane would not help (though increasing following distance is smart in general). Going 65 in this situation versus 75 would help with you being able to possibly avoid this type of accident.

 

When has some got killed in crash where the speed limit is 20 mph? That sounds a bit exaggerated

 

I don’t play the “if” game. I control my truck and my lane, I also see every other vehicle around me, however, it’s not my issue should another driver be too ignorant to control their own vehicle.
