Doing a motor swap from a 3406e with a 70 pin ecm to a 3406e with a 40 pin ecm...wondering what the minimum wires I need from the truck to the ecm just to get the motor running...
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

New to the forum...seems to be a lot of intellegence here. keep it up

A kinda pricey solution, but a possibility?
I believe Cat has harnass's also, but not positive on that...
To answer your question Mr. Haney will be along and be able to tell you exactly what to do...

There are not so many wires from cabine to engine ECU, ign. wire, gas pedal, pedal switches, j1708, J1939, C/C wiring and A/C wiring, JB switches, seems to me that is all, so you can cut and splice wires with heat shrink.

and I'm sure ECU program will not fit your truck and you'll pay for programming to someone like me))) LOL! For example pulses per mile, and speedo may read wrong.

last year I did engine swap Series 60 with N14 and tranny swap Autoshift to manual on International 9200.... a week for wires only!

To add.... The sensors, alternator, fan clutch will probably have different plug ins. You either have to splice or swap the parts. I like what black dog found.
    Where's Mr. Haney? :)

Cat to Cat is almost plug and play. Cat makes a harness and so does Mawk. Some are really simple, a guy here put a 3406E in an 06 379 in place of a C13 and the ecm plugs were identical.

The simple solution is the MAWK Industries wiring harness. CAT also sells this wiring harness for this motor swap. I think both CAT and MAWK are close to the same in pricing for the harness. Buying the harness gives you a piece of mind about which wire goes where in the different plugs. It also makes the splices water tight and corrosion free in the long haul.

    bugsy siegel Thanks this.

For some the plug and play is worth the extra cost, as haney said the is no way the wrong wires can be put together. Just my 2 cents, I know they are who I will be using for the harness to put an electronic motor in one of my old trucks when I get around to it.

CAT'S harness will only allow putting a 70 pin motor in a truck wired for a 40 pin motor, if I read you correctly, you are doing the opposite... putting a 40 pin motor in a truck wired for 70 pin. If that is the case, then Mawk Industries or doing it youself, is the only option. Thanks, Robby
