It's only a few hundred pounds, Driver. You'll burn a bunch of that off with fuel. If you're that worried about it drive around the scales.

California for instance. They also don't give an allowance for having an APU.

Check your tire specs/ratings & axle ratings on your tractor. I typically run 12,500 on my steers on a regular basis throughout the midwest without ever having an issue at the scales. With that being said, my tires and axles on my truck are rated to handle 13,000.

For 5 years I never got hassled in CA running 12300 to 12500 on my steer. Not saying they don’t or won’t nail people for it, just that I never got caught out there. I didn’t want to be messing with my 5th wheel all the time so I put it where it needed to be to bridge 86000 with my spread and I left it alone.wore out, TripleSix and spyder7723 Thank this.

Ya id have to see it on a state reg to believe it. Lot of big houses run coast to coast and getting under 12k up front on them is #### near impossible. -
Any new driver reading this-old thread I know, but the first thing to do if you can't slide to get the weight right, and you over maybe 200-500lbs is to look at your map and see how you can dodge the scales. Really not a big deal. You need to know the states and roads, some states like Florida have different rules. Just get a good understanding of off-interstate routes and how you can get there without crossing scales.
Linnysmom Thanks this. -
California may not have an apu exemption but they have better things to do than write tickets for 400 over gross, and they don't limit steer axle weight below your axle /tire rating.
Perfectly legal to run 13200 on my steer.Long FLD and spyder7723 Thank this. -
It all depends on which scale house and their mood. I talked my way out of a ticket at the Cottonwood scale when my steers were at 12,250 in a Cascadia rated at 12,000 and I had an APU. They can and will cite you if they feel like it.

Rated at 12000. They can’t cite you if your equipment can handle it.spyder7723 Thanks this.
