Yesterday I was on a traditional 8/2 split pattern. I was in sleeper berth for 8 hours, went on duty for a bit, then went off duty exactly at 8:30am. I completed the split at 10:30am and started my day minus the on duty time in between.
Later yesterday evening at 8:40pm I went off duty again for 2 hours and my clock paused for a split after the two hours were completed at 10:40pm. What was new for me was it paired the second 2 hour off duty period with the ending time of 8 hour sleeper berth I was in 12 hours earlier.
So basically the 2nd split included the time I was off duty in the first split by starting my clock at the end of my initial 8 hour sleeper, creating an 8-2-2-8 pattern.
Both 2 hour off duty periods are tied to the first 8 hour sleeper berth segment and both of the 2 hour segments occured after the 8.
It's a Samsara ELD I'm using, I assume it's legal.

I should clarify that at the end of the first 8 hour sleeper berth segment I only had one hour of 14 left from the day before. Completing the first 2 hour off duty segment gave me 13 1/2 hours of 14.

I was sick a few weeks ago, so I was taking a lot more breaks to gather strength. And I had this happen as well on Motive. I knew something funky happened when I started driving after the second 2-hour and I had more time left than I expected. Not sure if both of the 2-hour breaks were supposed to pause the clock, but they did. I was too brain dead to dig into it, now that you've reminded me I'll see what I can find in the next few days.

I’m not by any means an expert but I don’t believe that it is supposed to work that way down there. It should flag a violation after the next 8+ off. From my understanding it should only pause the clock with one of the breaks.

I thought I had complete understanding of the split sleeper rules but not now.
