    Can I use the 8 day in 30 rule on paper logs even if it has eld in truck for other drivers

    Legally you can. I don't see the company allowing it though. All those unassigned miles will be a bear come audit time.

    You can be exempted, not sure how it works.

    I don't know how, when the device malfunctions and you have to use paper, how the back office handles that, either.

    Most of the chicken haulers won't get another ELD when these go back, due to shorthaul and livestock exemption.
