Being gear driven off the crankshaft, it’s the blower / supercharger that starves the engine of air the most at low rpm’s. That’s when the turbo shines on a 2 stroke.
To much boost…..? Do you fully understand the dual purpose of the air box drains on a 2 stroke? Just asking…..

And Jim I admit that I do not fully understand the dual purpose of the air box drains. Could you explain please?Another Canadian driver, Jubal Early Times and OLDSKOOLERnWV Thank this. -
Good morning Oxbow my friend, hope all is good in your neck of the woods.
The 6V-92TA Silver in the 1981 International with the Ingersoll Rand TH-55 drilling Rig was rated at 350 horsepower. Pretty good for a small cube V6.
The 8V-92T in my 1980 GMC General is only rated at 365 horsepower, but is capable of more.
The 8V-92TA in the International Transtar I had was 435 horsepower.
The air box drains actually perform a dual purpose. They provide a means of draining the air box of any engine oil, but they also give the engine a way to “blow off” any excess air pressure.
If you ever get around a Detroit running just stick your hand under the drain and feel the air blowing out. It’s like a pressure relief or a bypass around the thermostat in a cooling system.
Not much with words lol, hope that makes sense…..Another Canadian driver, Oxbow and Jubal Early Times Thank this. -

The drains are open all the time, just a steel line screwed into the side of the block. If oil builds up in the air box…. someone’s gonna have a very interesting time as it turns into a cast iron shower….Another Canadian driver, AModelCat and Jubal Early Times Thank this. -
Little things dad taught me years ago, still wish I had 50% of his knowledge….Bean Jr., Another Canadian driver and Oxbow Thank this. -
I still don’t see where a turbo can do much good at low rpm. To get any boost at all at low rpm it would have to have such a small turbine wheel that it would create major blockage and even with the air box drains turbo overspending seems like an issue. Forgive me if my two stroke ignorance is showing.
only way you learn is by asking. I do realize blowers don’t really come in until higher rpm’s, but I also know that can be manipulated by the size of the drive gear. Much like changing impeller wheels.Bean Jr., OLDSKOOLERnWV and Oxbow Thank this. -
As to why, I best leave that to others.Bean Jr., OLDSKOOLERnWV and Jubal Early Times Thank this.
