9 - 5 Trucker??

Yes there are said jobs around. They do have there negatives.

They are very coveted and because of that, are able to request good experience. 1-5 years is not uncommon. They are also normally union shops so its also kinda who you know when trying to get in. A lot of them are package companies and auto supply chains, so its a lot of Just on Time freight. And one negative for me..... Its just not the same. If you know what I mean. Good luck, there are 100's of 1000's of drivers looking for that elusive seat.

 

I think package or parcel delivery is what you need. Trucking will require school, training, and weeks at a time away from home. Try and get on with fed ex or ups or dhl as a delivery driver. I beleive you only need a regular class c car license to drive the delivery vans.

 

that whole who you know and all is a bunch of crap - an ongoing myth that keeps a lot of guys from looking into union jobs anyfurther...


4 of our last 7 new hires just got out of trucking school. NONE of the 7 had buddies or family working in our location...

working city is a cool job if you want or need to be home every day.

 

Gasoline hauling is mostly local shift work. We worked from 6 to 4, that included nights too. But we worked 4 10 hour days per week. It's a goal you might want to set for yourself. As far as coming out of school and landing a good shift job it's unlikely. You have to remember the better jobs are the ones that the better drivers get. The drivers with the clean record and a few years experience are the ones the companies want. Sure you can find some jobs that are good without knowing someone but it does help.

Any shop that runs a shift board will place you on the bottom of the list with the runs no one wants. You'll just have to do you time. But never stop looking for a better job. Our company never held it against a driver if he wanted to move on to something better. It just didn't happen that often.
