Sterling used to be part of the Freightliner family too.

Yes, but in my opinion Sterling was cheaply made and I doubt if they sold as many sterlings as they did western stars & maybe that's why they got rid of them. WS is a better made truck than what Sterling was plus they've been around for a while too. Only time will tell though, if Obama gets his way the only trucks that will be left on the road will be schneider or swift freightliner cascadias.

I believe we will have to wait and see, but I think you will find out I'm not that far off. Now we all know we won't know the truth as to what happened and there are always circumstances beyond ones control.

There is no proof as to your last half except the container part. I know for a fact its wrong.

I think I am the loser in this battle getting between 2.8 to 4.1mpg but I am pulling 164,000lbs gross and a lot of off road time.

Going west I just got a little over 3 mpg grossing 80k. Was doing 70-75 into a 40-50 head side wind. Should of slowed down to improve but I wanted to make it to pdi to put her on the rollers but it was late already. Gotta visit them on the way back if come back up to L.A to load.

Sometimes gotta weigh the options time or money.

Going 70-75 mph with a 40-50 mph head wind would be like the equal to the fuel used to go 110-125 mph with no wind and that is not considering alot of westward runs like I-80 from Lincoln, NE to Laramie, WY are mostly uphill with usually a serious head wind.

I would like to find out someday what kind of fuel mileage I could get going 57 mph or whatever gravity let's the truck roll (jake only used over 85 mph)Eastbound on I-80 from Laramie, WY to Lincoln, NE with a big tailwind and down hill all the way?

I have one of those un-aerodynamic, 4500 lb, 4 wheel drive Jeep Liberty's. Have the suspension lifted from stock. But it does have one advantage..... it is a diesel. 4 cylinder, cast iron block, wet sleeved, garret turbo, Bosch common rail injection. That thing busts 30 mpg highway all the time. And it will still pull a 300 gallon fuel wagon thru the farm field without a hiccup. They had to take the 545 automatic transmission from behind the 5.7 Hemi engine to handle the torque from this little 2.8 turbo diesel. 180 hp and 310 lb of torque.

Most people that own the gasser models feel giddy about getting 21 mpg on a good day. The best we have gotten with the diesel model is 33 mpg. But the government made sure that only 11,000 were made.

But big SUV's and pickups not being necessary? Try taking your VW down my gravel road, 11 miles from town, when the winter weather is bad. People and politicians that have no concept of the nation outside of cities and highways always seem to know what the rest of us truly need. If we don't need this stuff, then neither does law enforcement or any other government agency.

this is quite good fuel economy for such vehicle

    interesting

well you are right in this it wont go anywhere , when i have to enter various depots , construction sites ( we deal with construction trucks)
    i always have a problem

but people who live in urban areas, big citys..... dont need such vehicle

i would rather have something low and wide and fast

so turbo 3000? slavik247 don't get surprised if you remove the turbo 3000 and don't notice any difference on the fuel economy, if you have any doubt, give it a try.

But really, wasn't Sterling just a rename of the old Ford trucks when Freightliner bought it? The Sterling trucks just seemed to be the old Ford Aeromax's. There were some minor changes made along the line, but they seems to be just carryover Ford Trucks.
