I was under the impression that the 9 Speed Transmission was relatively
obsolete. Boy was I wrong. Following are some examples of 822 ads I
    found for later Model trucks.

Note: I never said they were obsolete, but I did say that theye had somewhat fallen out of favor with the buying public. I was driving around last nite in one of our old yard dogs with a 9 speed, and it moved the trailer just as well as my 10 speed did. However, my 2006 was clearly (and cleanly!!!) a much nice truck than the 93 day cab I was using.

I have driven 9, 10, and 13 speeds, actually also 8LLwhich looks much like a ten with another button, the most miles are on 9 speeds, and I prefer the 13 to either of the other two but I would take a 9 any day over a 10, main reason is the shift pattern is almost the same as a 13 with the exception of the splitter. The 9 speeds I drove had better coverage of the upper gears than the 10 I drive now, I have high gear after I reach 60 and sometimes I have to run a gear down because of wind. I'm either running high RPM in 9th to run more slowly or running low rpm in tenth and lugging the engine. The engine gets hot if you are running full torque at low rpm for long periods of time. I did drive a C-ratio 10 speed and that did run up to 65 in 9th, it was tolerable.

My company was looking into buying some Petes and there is not a 10 speed trans option available for those particular trucks but they are available with a 9 speed. There are many used 10 speeds available, and it's much easier to sell a used truck with a 13 or 18 speed; I have been looking at lots of used trucks.

    Hey Guys:
    Thanks for your input.
There was no criticism of anything I was told about 9 speed transmissions.
I was just kinda of amazed at the amount of them that I found available as I began to look into them. There are sure a lot of them advertised.
It looks as if a lot of them were spec'd by companies in 2004 and after.
Thanks again for the information. I'm learning a little more each day.

Like packrat said, most are probably convertible to 13's, making them more appealing (to most drivers).

With the Eaton RTOC convertible transmissions, you install the necessary splitter gear air lines and 13 speed shift knob. The splitter gearset is present, it's just disabled when it's a 9 speed.

On a regular 9 speed, the splitter gear has to be installed on the end of the transmission, which is more labor intensive.

9 speeds and 13's are the same trans the 9 convertibles already have the splitter box so basically all you need is the knob and airlines the non convertible from what im told you can add the splitter box and have it converted for around 2k

    amarth2008 Thanks this.
