long story so I'll start.
I currently drive a 99 international 9200 with a ddec 4 s60 turned up to 600/1850 with be 171702. Other than that its stock. It's got decent power and awesome mileage but it lacks in comfort.
So now I'm purchasing a 93 w900l with a ddec3 12.7.
First off I would like to know what's the difference between the two motors? Would my Ecm work on it? I have a spare ddec 4 from the international that can go back on it.
Secondly I'm buyin the truck at a cheap enough price that I will be looking at rebuilding the motor as its sat for 10 yrs. looking for reccomendations on rebuilding an parts as well as tuning to make it pull hard but get good mileage.
Another option is possibly drop a 14l ddec5 in as I know where there is one for about $6000 but I would be tempted to rebuild it as well as I don't want to have to do it later on.
All your help is appreciated. Would like to nail down a good setup for this truck. Thanks again

The DDEC 4 ECM can bolt right in place of a DDEC 3. All the connections are the same, the DDEC 4 is just an improved version with a faster processor, more memory, data pages and other computer type upgrades over a DDEC 3. If you went to Detroit with a failed DDEC 3, they will sell you a DDEC 4 to replace it. There's some minor differences in the early 12.7's, most of the changes were to improve oil leaks, like adding a 3rd bolt to the cam plate and perimeter bolts around the valve cover rather than the center bolts. They changed the belt system a few times, the old style A/C compressor mounting sucked and would ruin front covers. Same basic engine design though.

Ahhhh my worry was hard parts in the two motors were different and would render my tune useless. So other than some accessories on the front the motors should be physically identical? Thanks for your help
-
I'm not sure about the tune, I have taken a few from 350 hp to a stock 430/470 HP tune (DDEC 3). Hard parts may be required to go higher. The ECM itself will work, but you need to verify if your tune will work.

I know a guy on here who took a 12.7 500 h.p. to 650 h.p. no change of any hard parts, and no problems.

Dont know if its accurate or not but i was told my 1996 12.7 and earlier should not be turned up. Was told they had smaller rods and wrist pin. Weaker. Was also told that they havent got any oil nozzles for piston skirts.
Like i said, only what i was told. -
Heavy haulers - my current 99 international is set up there as well and it pulls awesome with good mileage. I'm looking for recommendations on what to do with this new truck.
Northern hopper - the more info the better. I'm sure there's someone who can back up or argue that fact.
Now I think I will be sticking with the 12.7 because I do love it. If I get a reman dropped in at Detroit, will it be a newer block with the same motor as my 99? Or would I able to maybe use my current truck esn to get a reman for that older truck? What kind of reman would you guys recccomend? Also not sure if I would like to use my Eco that's been tweaked or find someone to try a different program and see what it has to offer? Any series 60 guru know how to make me run reliable and hard with good mileage? -
FYI, regardless of ANY tune you put into a S60, the 12.7 block is NOT capable to handling 1850 ft/lbs torque. 1650ft/lbs torque is it. The ECM will NOT allow a tune with 1850 ft/lbs torque, regardless of what anybody "sells" you... ONLY the 14 liter block can. It has thicker bottom end block walls & extra ribbing. a 12.7 WILL handle up to 800-900 horse without any mods. 91-92 S60's are DDECI. 93-94 are DDECII. 95-early 96 are DDECIII. Late 96-mid 02 are DDECIV. Many parts from DDECI & II are NOT interchangable with the DDECIII & IV. There are no NEW DDEC ECM's to be had. Reman is all you can get. A stock 12.7 with the correct drivetrain will provide good power & mpg.

Not sure I understand what your saying .
First you say a 12.7 will not handle 1850 trq no matter what .
Then you say a 12.7 will handle 800-900 hp.
You do know that with horsepower comes torque right???
You can buy a reman 12.7 or 14L
From detroit , all pre egr.
I've got a reman pre egr 14L in my glider and after some ecm tweaking it pulls just as good as my 2ws cat with a 600 file in it.
You just got to know who to go to for the "correct" adjustments. . -
I don't know what you mean you can't put an 1850 tune in. Does the programming not allow it? According to the guy that tuned my ecm and also it had to go to frieghtliner(Detroit dealer here) to have the ins an outs matched, I stressed to the frieghtliner tech not to flash the ecm. After he changed what needed to be changed he said I understand why an handed me a print out of all the ecm info including the hp an torque settings.
I'm trying to find the right person who knows the difference between my ddec 2 an my ddec 4 engines and knows if my 2 can be properly tuned or if it's a waste of time.
