My VOLVO Car Hauler, used to be a day cab, its a 2001 VOVLVO WAH 64, I have a coffin sleeper on the back. its a short walk home after work..LOL.. Small sleep space , NO TELEVISIONS or Electrical other than a tiny light. THE Reson for my post is I just had a $140 three foot hose break that lead to my $300 plus compressor, that connects to my $500 this, n its conected to my $250 that... dad blammit! N I"VE HAD IT!! That stuff only happens on Weekends, it was 104 in St Louis that day, Come MOnday I found The HOSE was back ordered N i was over the road! GEEZE!! HAlf my motor is INSIDE THE CAB! So , I grabbed 10 bags of ice and 2 $20 FANS. n off i went. It was soo nice in that truck, N I shut my engine off at night.. then bought about 8 bags the next day. I was just busting them out spreading them on the floor over on the passenger side and around the gear shifter. Burying the fans.... WOW! N it cleaned my flooor real good too ....ANYHOW..... I'm contemplating throwing out the entire AC and HEATER system and replacing it with the following. THE PASSENGER SEAT will be REplaced by a Well insulated box - ICE CHEST. I can run air thru it using two $25 Blow dryers set on cool and provide more than enough cool air for that tiny truck or sleeper. I figure FIve bags of ICe a day in the SUMMER at $2.50 a bag vs ? THe wear n tear on my engine from running the AC and HEater system...plus 8 Gallons a night to run my engine so I can have AC? THe Insulation will dampen the noise from them when I'm sleeping so thats not a concern.. THE ONLY CONCERN is BATTERYS! I have 4 of them now, I 'm thinking I may need to run a higher rated Alternator?? and use a separate box with two GEL MARINE BAtteries in it. MY QUESTION is DOes anyone on this board know anyone that's gone electric without installing a generator. IF so howd they do it. Any Ideas or concerns about the set up?
A/c.. Home made!?

i'd like to know your setup. cuz a full cooler only lasted me ONE hour. and didn't do a darn thing to cool the truck down.
and that was in a dump truck. which had no sleeper -
Wow. I would like a setup like that for my fishing trips.

I saw a guy selling something like this on Ebay. It was a cooler, with a bunch of tubing going into it, running around inside it a few times around the inner perimeter, then back out. The tubing was 1"pvc. Where the tubing came in and out, it had a grill on one side, and a small fan on the other. The fan was out of a computer, and ran on 12 volts. You put a bag of ice in the cooler, and turned on the fan. The air went into the tubing, ran around inside, and came out the other side, much cooler and dryer than when it went in. He wanted something like $100 for it, but I figured I could build one for less than $30, using an old cooler. The guy selling the thing said it kept his sleeper cool enough to sleep in, but not to the point of being cold. It was just crazy enough to work, from what I saw of it.

avoid anything that says "marine" as all that does is bump the price by about 1.50 - 2.50 x
what you are working on is a major long term challenge in engineering, first thing to do is get a Grainger Catalog then very seriously consider solar voltac cells on roof of cab, rather expensive or very expensive and does not store the energy into the dark hours but that is one idea to at least consider ~ hauling a bunch of batteries is not how I want do do it, Sulfuric acid -also known as sulphine acid, battery acid, and hydrogen sulfate- is a clear, colorless, oily, and odorless liquid that can destroy with fumes alone
look at A.P.U. 's as one alternative route to consider but alternator on 18-wheeler by design carries greater than the standard "80-amp" beefy replacement so what I suggest for the moment is to contact B&B Alternator Repair at Graham, TX and see what they say, all standard "wally"grade coolers and so on will fail rather soon compared to the $1,000 range equipment that is the only thing that will seriously be up to the load over part of a decade

Wow, forgot i posted this.. Anyhow... I did both.. Lol.. Cuz i got shammed into repairing my original AC, but was motivated to build this Thang by my unforgettable roadside nightmare brokedown in middleof nowhere upstate NY snow storm n all i could do is shiver n starr at 4 batteries connected to my blown engine!!
I gotta figure out how to post photos from
my i phone .. Till then ..check out campers websites for similar setups or.. Heres the specs...
I removed the passenger seat which is mounted ontop of a steel box frame bout ?? 14 in high.. Insulated it for sound n temps , drilled out two holes approx 1.5 diam. N mounted two $10 dollar store blow dryers.. I got a ice chest i set on top with a cheap radio shack computer fan pushing air into it two large holes with screen over them on the bottom to keep ice from falling thru ..., takes 3 bags of ice or two blocks ice shut my truck off every night , sleep about 5 or 6 hours n power is from my 4 battery bank .. I only run one blowdryer motor n the radio shack fan but so far my truck has cranked up every morning so?? No apu for me... Note: im in a day cab with a coffin sleeper n i got a curtain that cuts even that in half so... For u huys in the Condos?? Lol .. Dont even dream .. Lol .. Anyhow.. Thats the delio..Last edited: Sep 29, 2012
