It's a booster axle. Guess what, it's called the booster. Who'd have thought? It pushes the weight back up on the front of the truck. 3000 psi pushing down on it. When a booster tire goes, you'll think you lost a steer. It will move the truck over almost 2 feet right now when one goes, just hope no one is next to you. Had it happen.

The axles in front of the drives are called pushers. They are there for weight distribution, since you got like 60K pounds in a tiny area. They are air driven.

Bridgemaster is a manufacturer of them, and their trademark is sometimes used a colloquial term for that setup, as opposed to the Strong Arm type that you see on dump trucks. The Bridgemaster is hydraulic; the Strong Arm is pneumatic.

Interestingly, my dump and mixer instructor in driving school said that if you have a steer go, you needed to immediately stomp on the gas (accelerator) and lift the booster, otherwise it would sense the loss of pressure and keep pushing down driving the front into the ground (a little exaggeration).

If you ever lose a steer in an 11 yard mixer, and you have time to do that, it would be a miracle. About 95% chance you're gonna roll. My 359 actually had reinforcing attached to the tie rods and steering gear, just to help with steer blow out if it ever happened.
