Actually, that's incorrect. Simplex on UHF when using a Gain antenna is about 3 to 5 miles. You will cover a much greater area using a repeater that's located on a tall building or a mountain top.
The folks Down Under have been using UHF CB since the 70's, check it out UHF CB - Wikipedia … I know, they have more channels than the U.S., but if people started using GMRS and created a demand for more channels, I believe the FCC would allocate more. Remember, that's how we got 40 channel CB's...

Just for comparison, my agency uses VHF radios with freqs in the 150's. They use repeaters over phone to talk all over the state, but work excellent on the simplex tactical channels. Depending on terrain, we can talk anywhere from 10 to 40 miles at times. Average range is probably 15 miles or less though. The nice thing is how fast they scan and absolutely NO static! Far superior to CB's! It would be nice if people would upgrade since the technology is there now and is relatively inexpensive. Just my 2 cents.
