I hope they're paying attention in the construction zones... We loose lots of CALTRANS guys and gals every year.. Highway road worker has to be one of the most dangerous jobs around...

    Just a few thoughts.

GMRS isn't a technology, it is called a service.

    Nothing special about it.

By the way, $100 buys you a used Kenwood radio that can be programmed for GMRS.

Good for you, I've been in it a lot longer and have experience to back it so here is what I am thinking.

Public safety is told what to use, they have no choice when frequencies are allocated.

They are sold systems, not individual pieces of equipment after the frequencies are allocated.

The latest and I think one of the biggest mistakes is the massive investment into trunked systems for interoperability. Two things happen with this, one is the system is vulnerable to an attack that can bring down all of it, there is no simplex fall back but the other is the exclusion for accountability to the people to monitor these agencies.

UHF is a line of sight signal, you can't talk miles with a consistency unless you use repeaters.

Highway worker is I think 12 or even 14 as the most dangerous job. Truck driving ranks higher than cop or any other public servant.

We don't lose as many highway workers as we do drivers. I think there are 10x as much drivers who are killed.

Have you used UHF??? Judging by your comments I'd say, "No"...

That has absolutely nothing to do with the 74 mile whopper that got told by another user...

If the 74-mile range incident is the reference I think it is, I believe it was achieved by an operator who was sitting on a hill talking across a valley to a guy on another hill. Or something like that.

All this was the topic of hot discussions a few years ago.

    It was interesting.

Either that or reading this book and understanding antenna theory would take them a long way.
There's a big difference between resonance and SWR.
If my SWR was perfect and I wasn't resonant I wouldn't have been able to hear him from that distance. Resonance and impedance are more critical than SWR.

Oh boy, It's not your antenna or super radio that allows great distance (even short skip), it's a thing called, "E-Skip, or Sporadic E Propagation"... Here's the Wiki page if you're interested in the Science Sporadic E propagation - Wikipedia ..

    Schools out, later...…..
