I was at Henderson for 7 months last year, they recently opened their own CDL school and as of October started subhauling for PRIME INC. Im seriously considering going back and being a trainer again, theyre a smaller company and have to admit, treated me decent. I have been around trucking for almost 20 years now and there are only a few companies I felt were worth while. Henderson was one of them. Any questions, feel free to ask me.

I agree. I spoke to a few of the 160 hour schools and it seems they spend 80 hours of classroom time just so you read the PTI and the DMV manual for the written tests. Then you spend 8 hours a day in a truck with 3 other students while you drive for 2 hours and then sit and watch someone else drive for 6 hours. Seemed like a lot of wasted time. I chose a school that is 1 on 1. I did the studying myself and passed the permits. I pay them to help me learn the backing skills and PTI for the DMV driving test. 12 hours of backing skills, 10 hours of actual PTI practice, 4 hours of road driving a 10 speed and 4 hours road driving a 13 speed. Cost me less than $2k.

As for the companies that will hire you without the '160 hour' course, I have talked with several larger companies and they said that my school was on their approved list. I have only talked to 1 company that said they need the certificate to read 160 hour course no exceptions. (Trans-systems)

Not trying to shill for Systems, but the 160-hours is REQUIRED for a WA CDL and they are based in WA. They also generally have a fairly short (4-week) training program (plus orientation) so you really DO need to know how to drive before you get there. In the 4 weeks you've got to learn the Quallcomm, tarping, ty-downs, dealing with customers, and all the rest. It's not a lot of time for a boatload of new learning. If they need to teach you how to drive too, it's going to be rough. This from a lot of talks with systems trainers and student-drivers in that training cycle.

    -Hope that's helpful. -Jub.

allsmilez: I just had a nightmare school-wise and wrote a couple of posts I thought you might find helpful in terms of choices.

The school is less important to you obviously in Delaware, but the issues are the same. Read the entire thread. it's not too long. It will give you an idea of what to ask about etc. I hope it helps. I wouldn't wish my situation on anyone. But it was my mistake for being to ignorant to ask BEFORE I went to the school. so props to you on finding the forum and checking BEFORE you plop down a lot of money.

Best of luck. Let us know how it works out please.

Wow. Which RM did you go to? I went to RM Columbus, OH. for under 5k. Still pricey for what you're getting. But within the standard, I guess. Enjoyed it and learned a bunch.
