I am seriously considering entering the industry. However, as a female I have some real concerns, particularly personal safety on the road and at truck stops and discrimination in the industry. I am reliable, honest and hardworking. I am also in my mid-50s, so am concerned that will be a consideration even though age discrimination is illegal.
I just started reading trucking forums and will continue to do so to learn as much as I can. I would really appreciate feedback on the above concerns and areas below - from newbies as well as experienced drivers - as there is nothing as good as conversation about a subject.
Also, I have read some horror stories about some trucking companies. I am looking into Swift, England, Gordon (GTI), Schneider, CRST, Knight, Roehl, and ConWay. Any feedback on any of these is appreciated.
Finally, I am weighing attending an independent trucking school vs a company-sponsored program. So far have only found Roehl and CRST actually have CDL-A programs followed by company orientation and OTR training. CRST also has a 'Train your Partner' program that my husband and I are interested in to get us driving together. Does any other (good) company have this?
Thanks in advance to all who respond for your input, insight and experience. This will be a HUGE lifestyle change, so we are not taking this lightly . . .![]()
A lot to learn . . .

Hey welcome to the forum, lets see....safety i dont think is an issue for women most of us I'd say 99% of us are true gentlemen I see alot of women on the road and handle their own pretty well. The option of carrying a legal blade, pepper spray is always open but no guns. You and your husband would make a great team I dont know of companies with the program that you have described but keep in mind that all the big carriers you mentioned will make you sign a contract for 1yr minimum and pay back the CDL bill wich is way over inflated. I would suggest looking into a private school and then into a local carrier so you can prepare for the open world. Thats what I did and believe me your first yr its tough learning but once you learn the principles, laws and the truck you will be ready for the hills, snow, traffic, inspections, logbboks and all the good stuff of shippers, receivers, time management, calling in late, breakdowns, blowouts, layovers, weight adjusment and oh yea tickets...
hopefully not that. Hope this helped you guys and use this forum to research the companies of your choice you can also apply.

Welcome, there are many women drivers today, dont fear, there are more good guy's(gal"s), than bad out here, study hard, and pay attention in school, once you have your CDL, the real training will begain out on the road, good luck, and let us know how it's going

Welcome to the madness. There are more and more women drivers out there. Safety is a concern for all drivers but just like in the real world be aware of your environment. I wouldn't worry about the age as long as you are able to pass the dot physical.

You might want to rethink the companies that have their own cdl programs, afterwards you have to stay with them a predetermined amount of time and they start taking the cost out of your check right away so you won't be making much until its paid off and if you end up hating the company you are stuck until the last dollar is paid back could make for an unpleasant year or two but if you get with a good company it might be worth it, good luck and remember double clutch it and then floor it

Prime inc. has a training program also, but like everyone has stated, you must stay with them for one year to get the training for free. After you or your husband has completed enough solo time they are allowed to train you. Safety is always a concern, i recommend a 6 cell mag light and a stun gun, they can definitely level the playing field. Just use the same precautions you would use every day, common sense is ultimately your best asset. As for age, people your age and older sucessfully pass through these programs every week. Good luck in what ever you decide!

I too have been looking and reading and looking. I live in phoenix and stopped by swifts corp office last week. They seem to be the worst comp i have looked into so far. Their training school cost u $37 a week for the 13 mo u need to sign on with them for. Then u spend 6 WEEKS with a trainer and get $50 a day. For those 6 weeks ur a team, u drive he sleeps, u sleep,he drives. (wheres the training part, if hes sleeping) After that u get a WHOPPING $.25/MILE. Maybe there better if you dont go to there school. Ive read some people lke working there, but i dont know.
hope it helps
