They were built by several manufacturers, the 1 I have was built by gilson bros. In Plymouth Wisconsin.
They built really high end stuff until they're demise in 1982 .
Older briggs engines such as that one are easily identified of the build year by the first 2 digits of the serial number ....if the first 2 digits are 78 ...it was built in 1978 .
A new chapter begins and a new home for the Morehouse/fcc orphans

To eat poorly on the road is a choice, it’s not the problem you’re making it out to be. Drivers choose to eat that way, any fast food restaurant has low carb options, leave the bun off eat the meat and the veggies. Prep and pack your own healthy meals, water is available in every cooler, I get your distain for the industry, but unhealthy people make unhealthy decisions. My legs still work at the end of my driving shift so you know what I do, get out and walk! I’m 21 years in to this and couldn’t agree more that trucking has went down the tubes, but there are choices to be made out here and most guys don’t make them, the whole “blame it on the industry” thing is getting kind of old from us old timers who are simply tired of it, just leave it at that and move on.

To my small engine geeks here I have a question?
Picked up a 4 year old troy bilt mower today with a briggs 550ex on it ..free ....but running badly ..surging and running lean, popping occasionally.
Machine has had extremely good care which we know is unusual .
I took the lazy way around it I admit running tranny fluid in the gas for a few hours to clean up the carb but no change.
So I finally pulled the carb and took it apart and the dam thing looked new inside and out , nothing wrong !
I did notice the warmer the engine got worse it ran .
This machine looks dam near new with low hours on it and I cant find anything wrong with it .
I'm leaning toward the magneto ...any suggestions?austinmike, Suspect Zero, Speedy356 and 1 other person Thank this. -
Magneto shouldn’t care about getting warm.
