I recently graduated from my truck driving school. And I was totally unaware about exactly what kind of equipment to be trained on. Now I find out the school took me for my money? To cut to the chase I was trained on a 6 speed and now I find out that is completely the wrong stick to be trained on. I find out more information after I get into my search for a driving job that I should have been trained on a 10 speed or higher. Now no one will hire me! I have a class A License and it is no good because I don't know how to drive the 10 speed. I'm really in a bad position. What Should I do? Can anyone give me any advise? Will any companies still except me? Thankyou. :blah5:

Apply at all companies that say they will accept students.

Well first I would apply to all companies that will take students as mentioned above, then jump in and learn.....there shouldnt be much to learning how to shift, after all I am assuming they taught you all the stuff to get your license properly???

I applied for Sherman Brothers and they said they except students. And I went all the way up to oregon last week to find out that they will not except me unless I know 10 speed and 13 speed well. So I'm wondering will all the companies feel the same way?

They only taught now to shift in a 6 speed not a 10 speed. So I'm like a fish out of water once I get into the whole rpms and such. Once the switch goes up its over :smt043

  7. that is why they call you a student because you need to learn

What you need to know is how to shift the commercial, unsynchronized transmission. Doesn't matter how many times you shift between start off and high gear.

FYI: Guess what? I "don't know how" to drive a 6 speed.

If you have a Class A and your driving and work record is acceptable, Schneider would e probably be willing to work with you, I'm guessing that you were trained in a Class 6 vehichle and they don't need that many gears. AJ drove first with a 9 speed, that is like a thirteen speed, but without the splitter, he is driving a 10 speed now and really hates it.
All of the heavy truck transmissions are unsynchronized but many of the medium duty trucks are synchronized. You could go someplace they use autoshift, that would help, it won't be at Schneider for a few years yet.:sad11:

Schneider is buying all automated shift in 2007. That's the rumor anyway. I don't believe bulk will get automated but van will.

Siba, Schneider will work with you and teach you the 10 speed. No prior experience is required. They actually prefer students that don't "know" how to drive a truck so they can teach you their way.

PM me if you need more info.

I got my CDL having only driven an 8-speed transmission. I went for what I thought was just a job interview and the guy said "let's go do a road test". WHAT!!!! He put me in an 07 Volvo with a 10 speed and guess what. I ground the heck out of the gears. But he could see that I could handle the vehicle. I didn't drag the trailer over any curbs or take out any road signs. I could keep it between the lines and put the trailer where I needed to. I got the job.

What I am saying is that you learned on an unsynchronized transmission. That is all you need. I wouldn't think that any school out there can prepare you on every transmission available. 8,9,10,13,18 speeds. That would be a heck of a training fleet. There are probably a lot of other tranny's that I don't even know about other than those few I listed. But I wouldn't say I "can't" drive any of them. I would say it would take some practice. Have a little confidence in yourself.

If you still feel that you have to learn on a 10 speed then call around to some other schools in your area and just tell them that you already have your CDL and you would like to spend an afternoon driving a 10 speed to familiarize yourself with it. My guess is that it wouldn't cost much at all.

    Good Luck

    Dave
