Ive been thinking about it for the last ten years but Im realizing this is much more than just a new job; its a whole new lifestyle. A few questions.
1: I live in central Missouri and have been thinking Id try with Prime however my kids live in San Diego and I want to relocate back home to Cali, would that be a problem at Prime or do they cover the left coast?
2: As I understand the HOS rules if you use the 70/8 schedule you can fit in 70 hours on duty every 6 days. Are you generally able to get 11 hours driving done on every 14 hour period? Also it appears under the new rules you have to take another 24 hours off so your max would be 70 in 7 days. Is that right?
3: Given these hour limitations doesnt getting stuck in 5 mph traffic make you want to drive over everybody? Does it ever benefit you to pull over, go off duty and save you precious driving hours for when you can make some money?
4: Showers. How much do they cost at the truck stops. I thought they used to give them free with fuel purchase. How frequently do you need to buy fuel?
And finally, why does it seem that recruits always take a bus. I only live 4 hours away from Springfield and would rather drive myself. Do they not allow this?
Thanks
A possible convert with a few questions.

We run all 48.
It's 70 hours in 8 days.
You can run 11 hours (assuming that isn't pruned back to 10-hours to satisfy the railroads and their surrogates - the safety lobby,) but after June 2013, you'll need to take a half-hour break within the first 8 hours on-duty. That's probably a good idea in any case if you don't want your eyeballs turning yellow!
If you run out of hours before the 8 days you can recharge your hours with a 34-hour break (restart.) After June 2013 (assuming the latest politically-motivated hatchet-job on the HOS rules stands) you'll need to have two midnight to 5AM sleep periods included in that time.
In the worst way! LOL!! Unfortunately, thinning the herd is also known as vehicular homicide, so it's not recommended.
Yup, there are those times, but once your 14-hour clock is started, you can't stop it unless you stop for 8 continuous hours.
TA is posting $12 for a shower.
50-gallon minimum purchase. They put shower credits on a rewards card - shower credits evaporate after 5 days.
Depends on where I'm driving, and how fast. Usually every couple of days. But that's me, my technique, and my truck. Company types with a lightweight tractor are usually fueling every day.
Because that's what they pay for, although there is a reimbursement formula for someone who flies in.
Sure. There's long term parking available.
You're welcome. -
Wow, great answers IP. But going to add some more stuff.
1. Company drivers buy fuel as noted/told to on the Macro 27, it can be 1-2 times a day depending on the price and where u are running, have done it lol.
