"Question........Any O/O's have any advice for someone looking into being an O/O? Really thinking about it and have for the last 14yrs I have been a driver.....Thinking I would like to be Indepd....Not sure if I should be on my own or with a company....Anyone? How does FSC work,Good Or Bad? Truck Ins? Repairs,Too costly? Truck/Trailer payments? The wife & I are thinking of packing up everything and putting it in storage and live out on the road for awhile....Need to get away from everything and kinda enjoy our time together by ourselves.....Is being an O/O a good way to go.....And should I go with a company or be on my own?"

I would be very cautious about jumping into debt right now with the current state of the economy and the looming fiscal cliff. We could very easily see another recession, the last one in 2008 weeded out alot of owner ops and companies big or small. But with all of that aside, my personal opinion would be to lease onto a company first, learn the ins and outs of owning a truck, hard lessons learned this way are more forgiving than when you have your own authority. The vast majority will lease to a carrier first, some get their own authority from the get go, I believe they are more prone to fail.

Love the media - "Fiscal Cliff" - US business is resilient and on so many levels we are nowhere near the same condition as we were back in 2008. Great example is inventory levels. In 2008 we had weeks worth of inventory in stores and warehouses. Now we have days. Why is that important in trucking? Because when the economy slows those weeks turn to months and orders stop for a long enough period that it snow balls. But now, 2-days inventory turns to 5-days and that relates to a bad week in trucking vs shutting doors.

So with that example in mind, look around our economy and see how things have changed and it is easy to see that if Congress doesn't figure out a way to kick the can down the road again the impact is going to be minimal.

In terms of starting a trucking business. If you are a business person (not a truck driver that is buying a job) this is a great time to get into this. Used truck prices are down, capacity is tight, and more and more carriers are looking to have relationships with independents and small carriers vs. increasing company drivers and leasing on O/O's.

And as far as the rest of it, use the search button and you will find many threads on the financials. Then start studying the industry and figure out what added value you can bring to your customers.

Thank you both for the info.....I know alittle buisness but my wife took buissness in collage and is pretty good with finaces.....Think I spelled wrong,lol...sorry...Just got home and a tad bit beat.....I'll definetly keep looking into and watching things...Wasn't gonna do it this very second....Was thinking maybe come spring or summer....or maybe next fall.....We wouldn't have any house payment(or elec/gas/etc) so that would be a plus....Just a $125 storage fee every month......Cant say no more cable bill cause that will end up turning into a satalite bill for the truck,lol....Would still have a car payment but no biggie....The car would be at my brothers till we came home every so often to visit......Again thank you both very very much for the info.....And I'm always looking for more...

Have a decent amount of start up capital and operating cash on hand (not credit cards). $20-30k might seem like overkill- until you blow a trans or engine, then it goes away fast! Look into joining OOIDA for help getting your business plan started. As a member you also derive many benefits on the cheap, like drug consortium, and a lot of other stuff.

    PapaBill Thanks this.

I have seen many mixed reviews for satellite systems on trucks. The main choice though is the Vuqube by far but there are tons of mixed reviews. Some say they never find the satellite signals others say they have no problem.

I am going to guess that getting a good signal all depends on where you are in the country and the surrounding area of where you are parked.

"Thanks for the info Vision & BrownsFan(I'm a Steelers fan,lol....), Vision....I have always looked up to OOIDA even tho I have always been a company driver because of them standing up for driver's rights so I'll definetly look into to joining them......Me becoming an O/O is still in the mind at this time and I value all the info that you all have givin me and awaiting more from others.....I know I'll need some captial and I do understand that things can be very costly.....I pay attention to all that as I have been around others that are/were O/Os......My trainer back when I started driving was an O/O with a brand new truck and it had afew problems within the 6weeks I was with him.....Was kinda looking that if I do become an O/O I might try and get a Volvo 780....Due to my wife's problems I would like as smooth a ride as we can get......And you all can put me down if you like but I am a Freightliner fan mostly due to the fact that most of the trucks are catered to any size person and I'm only 5-5,lol.....Thank you all for the info and please keep it coming as like I said this is still in the mind only stage....."
