    Hey all,

Just a dumb question here, sitting here on a layover watching Ice Road Truckers, and could somebody tell me why that they don't just use huge hovercrafts like the LCAC's that our military use?

That's a good idea....maybe they've never considered it.......only problem is the season is only a few months long. It might be practical if they could lease them for the season.

Wouldn't make for a good TV show if they were just floating over the ice bow would it

They do use hovercraft in Alaska, but they aren't more widespread because they aren't very fuel efficient when judged on payload:

A train can move 1 ton 450 miles on 1 gal
A semi truck can move 1 ton 200 miles on 1 gal
A plane can move 1 ton 50 miles on 1 gal
A hovercraft can move 1 ton 30 miles on 1 gal

Blimps would be cheaper. Blimps that could carry several trailers was being studied at one time.

Probably primarily related to ~$20M, a crew of 5, a range of 200 miles, and the availability and cost of JP fuel.

    It's a reality show. They're not actors.
