We've all asked that question that the veteran drivers just love, i.e., "What's a good company to work for?" I admit, I asked it. But what I'm curious about is, "What do we mean when we ask that question?" So, guys and gals of the Wannabe Class of 2010, what do you mean when you say "good company"? What are the "good" things we're looking for? What's "good" for me might not make a #### bit of difference to you, but,....is there a common "good"?

And, now that I'm approaching my sixth month of steadfast "wannabeism", and, I'm perilously close to graduating into "ohshitwhathaveIdoneism", I'd like for veterans to tell us, IN NO UNCERTAIN TERMS, what "good" means when it comes to carriers.

Ah, the memories that one brings back. In my rock and roll days I used to wail that one with my co-lead singer....a drop dead, killyahot brunette. We did some "dirty dancin" sharing one mike.

I think you already answerred that...what might be good for you might not mean squat to me. Only you know what you're looking for, so do your research and find a company that fits what you want. Hometime, benefits, no-touch freight, home time...whatever it is that means something to you. One man's trash is another man's treasure, right?

Oldnewb... from a wife's point of view...

My husband once worked for a company, that while it was nothing on the national or even regional radar, was one of the best companies you could ever hope for. The old man closed his doors several years back, but his (24 year old) daughter re-opened the company about 4 years ago....

Back in my husband's day, it was a GREAT company! The pay was top notch. We're talking I could pay ALL of the monthly bills with ONE weekly check, and still have MORE than enough left over to buy 2 weeks groceries! My husband was home 2-4 nights a week, and home almost every weekend. Insurance was good, and all the little perks that came from working for a "one man show" were really COOL! He had a personal relationship with every one of his drivers, and knew all the driver's wives and children by name. He was the first one at the hospital when one of his drivers wives had her baby nearly a month early... and he spent more $$ on that baby girl! LMAO! His equipment wasn't new, but it was in excellent condition, and it was all paid for. And to be very truthful, he helped me learn to be GOOD at being a driver's wife.

His daughter re-opened, with even higher standards. There is a WAITING LIST to work for her. Yeah, I know all about her waiting list and her standards. I worked with her, and my hubby is on that list.

for me, a "good company" isn't a company that is going to jerk me around.

I completely understand that I'm the low man on the totem pole. I dont expect to get a ridiculous starting wage, or a brand new pimped long nose pete, with 6 inch stacks, lights and chrome up the wazoo.... uhhhhhhhhhhhh crap, what? where am i? uhh, right. "good companies." I would LIKE to get on with one of the "smaller" local companies that drive OTR. A company with a few hundred trucks, not a few THOUSAND. But if it gets down to "JUST GET A JOB ######" then concessions will have to be made. If the only options I get are Prime, or Swift, or JB Hunt... Then that's what I have to do. And if I have to do it for 1 full year before I can move on to a better job? Then that is what I have to do.

I'm taking this career change seriously. I'm under no delusion of "$50,000" my first year, or "home every night" hell, I wont even believe "home every weekend."

But here is something I do expect. I expect to tackle any opportunity that I'm given with the fervor and dedication to excel that I've given every other job I've had. That I'll work to the best of my abilities, and if that isn't good enough, I'll find out how to improve myself. And that at the end of the day, I can be satisfied that I'm part of something that is so much bigger then myself, and if I do have an issue, that I have personal friends I can talk to, and impersonal friends (you guys) who have experienced things that I only look forward to, who can help guide me.

Too me a good company is one that gives you respect right off. Its the way they treat you. A friendly handshake when you come off the road. A courteous smile. Trucks that are well maintained with a repair crew that doesnt scratch their heads and tell you "its nothing to worry about, all trucks are supposed to loose 6 gallons of antifreeze over night" (or some such foolish thing). I want a company that makes me feel welcome, makes me feel they really want me to try my darndest to keep up the team spirit. The company should be well informed of recent updates in their directions.

Items that would help even more. Provide wifi for their drivers (directly compatable with any laptop). Blackberries for the drivers instead of clumsy outdated qualcomms (lets face it, these things should have been retired 10 years ago). Quiet APU's, these shouldnt sound like a lawnmower with out a muffler. When you go to bed at night, driver comfort really is key.

Yes getting paid on time is a real plus. Not having to gothrough hurdles with Business or Safety to find out what happened to your missing paycheck. Medical and dental are always appreciated.

I would like to see a company that hires you on and doesnt need to find ways of discriminating against you just so they dont need to pay you.

As to the respect? If your constantly missing deliveries and not respecting company or its personel, yeah you should go elsewhere.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------
I personally have had some wonderful people that have worked for me. When they come along I will move "hell & high water" to make sure I can keep you as long as possible. Its important to me, if your good, that you get the best treatment I can give you. I will know this in the first hour that you are working for me.

Alas business is not what it has been. Only 3 lawns these days, down from 14. Makes it tough to hire any one.
