So I managed to get my first ticket in 8 years today, coming down the Grapevine (northbound) in Comunistfornia. I was cited for 50mph in a 35mph zone. The officer was parked on the east side of the northbound lane EXACTLY where the speed limit for trucks drops from 45 to 35.
I was empty in a line of trucks, 3 in front of me and one behind, all evenly spaced, going the same speed. I had been with this group of trucks for quite some time. When I asked the officer why he choose me... he replied because you were going faster than them. He went on to say I was gaining on them. Hmmm... So some how I was going 15mph faster than them but yet still in line with them... I guess that's for the judge to decide, I'm sure he will take my word over the officers right?
I'm going to stop just short of calling the officer a liar but as God as my witness I was not going any faster or slower than the rest of the trucks I was in line with. I had my cruise set at 45 with the jakes on high. The jakes were holding me at a rock solid 47mph. I guess he figured rounding up to 50 was acceptable. In fact the ticket is even marked "approximately" 50mph.
Anyway, I'll stop crying like a little girl now and get on to my question...
Can any one tell me the specific wording on the truck speed limit signs going down the Grapevine? I can't remember if they say the truck speed limit is for loaded trucks or for a certain weight or truck and trailer or if they just generically say trucks, as in all trucks regardless of weight . Hopefully you see where I'm going with this... When he came back with the ticket, I mentioned in passing that I was empty. He paused for a moment when I said that then kindly handed me over the ticket. I'm hoping for an out here...
A question for those of you familiar with Grapevine

I've never seen anything other than "Truck Speed XX MPH"
Doesn't matter if you're loaded or empty.
I've been hearing quite a few other drivers that are getting "nit picky" tickets that Cali never used to bother with...guess they gotta pay the bills somehow huh? -
The speed limit is for all trucks and is posted as a maximum.
Just by your admitting you were set at 45 and held a 'rock solid' 47 will convict you since the limit is 35.
I know what you're asking. Indian John Hill out of Pendelton has a sign posted based on GVW and loaded weight.
Grapevine is for trucks...period.
sorry for the bad news.
BTW, this is a famous trap where CHP writes a lot of tickets. You have to be VERY careful on the grapevine.
California needs the money. -
'I got one a few years ago for "being out of designated lane." I was empty and jumped out of the truck lane just to get around a couple of trucks going 25mph.

The speed limit is pretty clearly posted on those hills. If you haven't been on that particular stretch of road, then you should have been paying closer attention to the signage. IMO, you have nobody to be upset with here but the nut behind the wheel.
On the other hand, you said the ticket was "approximately" 50 MPH...I'd call in and see if you can't plead to 45 in a 35 and see what that gets you...couldn't hurt. -
I here ya... I'm guilty of speeding that's for sure. It's not the first time I've been over the grapevine either... I'm just upset I got singled out, wrote up for more than I was doing, given zero slack, and I don't like the fact that the officer was sitting on the "line" where the speed limit changes from 45 to 35... Another 100 yards down the road and I would have been much closer to 35 mph along with the rest of the trucks in the line. I saw the darn bear before I saw the 35mph sign.
I'm trying not to come off as a whiner (failing miserably probably) but the whole thing just plain feels wrong to me. -
Hasta La Vista baby!RAILSPLITTER Thanks this. -
I feel ya driver. There's been quite a bit of talk lately about a lot of states not cutting slack, especially as far as speed is concerned. Gotta make up the budget shortfalls somehow, I suppose.
Seems like everyday I hear about someone getting wrote for 59 in Cali...I usually set my cruise at 59 and not pay any attention to it. Not any more.
I think I'd call in and see what you could do with lowering the ticket to 45/35...the worst thing that could happen is they say no, right? -
I would seriously try to get it lowered to at least 49 in a 35. Getting a ticket for going 15 or more mph in a commercial vehicle can really screw up your cdl.
