Maybe this request is out of line, but here goes. Any chance of getting a "ride along" for a day trip on an 18 wheeler out of SE PA? I am interested in getting a feel of what a day on the road feels like. I'll find my own way home, via bus most likely. Down 81, up to New England, out west, whatever. I don't care where, I would just appreciate the opportunity of the experience. Part of me wants to do the OTR thing, the other part tells me I must be nuts. A 1 day ride along will help me decide.
I apologize if this request is over the top.

It's a very limited group that might be able to do that. Most companies, for insurance reasons, restrict who can be a passenger in the truck to employees, and a few companies have programs to allow relatives. But for the most part, there are no passenger rules in effect for the majority of drivers. There may be some O/O's that operate under their own rules, but there are less of them on the board than there are company drivers.

I was thinking I would encounter just what you wrote. An O/O is probably my best best. Hopefully someone comes through. I would pay for the gas. I don't expect such a favor for free.
-
Before you offer to pay for gas, one, we all burn diesel fuel. Two, we all get about 6-6.5 mpg on a good day. It ain't a Yugo. I burn a good 300-400 dollars a day in fuel when I am running.

$300- $400 worth of fuel - I figured that before I offered. But thanks for covering me in case I had not.
Education is not cheap.

U want a feel for it hop in your own vehicle, drive 30 miles from your place of resident, sit in a parking lot for 4 hrs.. Pull out drive 650 miles to your choice of destenation, sit there for 5 hrs, pull out drive 300 miles and then sit, for 2 hrs.. Pull out drive 550 miles.. find parking lot and sit.. Now you got some time off, get to the nearest truck stop and get a shower and head home.. Doing the same that u did to get to that point! Now place your load 200 miles from where u live and get there and be told there aint any loads to get u home and head 1200 miles away from, after u have completed this let me know -
but driving in a car over that course is alot different than being in a truck. I appreciate your concern for my safety also. I still want to experience this first hand. How can someone make up their mind to such a commitment with out actually having done it? Do most people sign up for an OTR job having "never been there"? If so no wonder the retention rate is so low.

There are a lot of trucking companies in PA. Poke around your home area, maybe even 30 or more miles away and see what you can find for a company. While you are doing this you may just find a company that will hire you if/when you decide to get a CDL.
Start calling the ones that are farther out than what you want to drive to and talk to. You may call 50 companies before getting any satisfaction. -

Actually Crete has a terminal not too far from me. I live in Reading, PA and they have a terminal in Macungie. I have been hearing good things about them.I will drop by their place next week and talk to them. I will keep you all posted. If I do start driving a truck do I have to change that to "y'all"?
Just kidding.
