Good morning. Just wanted to start off by saying thanks. Lurked here for a few monthes learning a few things.
Anyway, Im looking into the whole driving world of things. I work for a distributor of construction machinery now, and 95% of what I do involves sitting in a tomb of a office behind a desk and a computer. 630 to 330 M-F..... Im bored....VERY bored after 3+ years. Now granted, home time, pay, and perks are nice, (Grossed 42,000 last year), but im losing my mind in the process.
I grew up in a class 8. Ran reefers/flatbeds with pops all over the country as a kid. So I got to see first hand how it was to live with a trucker. Gone for weeks and missing events and family time. I worked on diesels when I wasn't on the road with him. Since then, i've bought a diesel truck which I hook the gooseneck to and "hot shot" things for whoever needs something hauled. I've made plenty of long haul runs on short time schedules. Running very hard 8-10 hour days are nothing new to me, in fact, I love it! I'm 26 years old and I have no ties that bind. No CDL, but have had my DOT physical for 3 years now, and very clean driving record. Can drive all the companies service trucks when the tech's are gone. Help drive semi's and grain trucks when I worked on the farm years ago. Even worked at a truckstop shop for about 6 months. I have a truck and a new fifth wheel which I "live" in to pay for each month, thats it. Im VERY mobile and always seem to be on the go or on some trip when im not called to work. I love everything to do about trucking/traveling, and for crying out loud, I have to watch Smokey and the Bandit at least once a week to get my "fix"!! lol
Anyhoo, my questions are. If I were to really get serious about it, what would be the route to go? Places to look? People to talk to? I don't honestly care about money or hometime, long as I can pay my bills. And to be honest, I could live off 1300 bucks bring home a month fairly well.
Any thought or advise would really be appreciated. I need to do something before my sanity slips away for good!!
Thanks!!
Nick

Welcome to the forum!
First step in my opinion, if you're into it, is to go and get your CDL. While you're doing that, you'll have plenty of time to do further research on which way you'd like to go (if possible) after school.
There's tons of threads you can read here, literally hours and hours worth of info. Use the search function as more than likely, your questions have already been answered numerous times and pretty recently too.
If not... we're all ears!
Good luck to you and keep us posted as to your progress. -
Thanks for the reply. I've been doing some searching some now and then when I get time.
Guess I just wanted to hear some input on other experiences and what they might do if they were in my shoes with my situation. Gives me a little input to weigh out the pros and cons.... -
Welcome! I have been on here for over a month and still learning lots. There are many people on here who are quick to answer your questions. Find a private school in your area and go have a chat with them

just a heads up..whats the GCWR(combined weight of your truck, trailer and heaviest allowed load) coz you may need a cdl already what with new laws..the DOT would maybe see you as being 'for hire' when it comes to hauling peoples stuff. im only mentioning it coz im at school right now and we have a guy in our class who is doing his CDL right now for pulling similar equipment.

Im all good on regs and such for what and how I haul in that department.
the flying scotsman Thanks this. -
Good luck to ya. It,s not an easy life. not easy on your family. you make more $$ now than being a rookie driver. The sacrafice,es are many. Dont just jump. How will you get a CDL ? Better to train with o/o. Dont even know if you can do that anymore. Ill shut up
