As we all know, trucking rates and pay went up due to introduction of ELD and ensuing sudden reduction of industry capacity. Truck drivers can no longer fudge the log books.

    Now what?

OK, so this is what is happening that I am seeing. All kinds of people, like immigrant roofers, janitors etc are rushing into "trucking" due to the money.

I heard the following while "sitting at a bar": specifically, they found a way to get CDLs without proper immigration checks, and really with somehow magically easier testing requirements. It was hard to hear at the bar, so to speak, but some of them have no idea how to drive trucks but have CDLs with no restrictions. It is a big business and people that I heard about at the bar who were wholly unrelated were in that position, looking for a trucking job with zero knowledge of truck driving.

We all know how it will end up: this is an industry with very inelastic demand (whatever needs to be moved will be moved regardless of rates). No surprise that rates went up when some capacity was taken out.

But, if thousands of underpaid and unqualified drivers appear, and go into the market, the rates will plummet again. Very likely, at the end, truck drivers will make LESS money than they did in 2017, because truck drivers can drive fewer miles and thus are less productive.

I don't think we're in any danger any time soon.

Funny that you chose a picture of an American driver's inability to read warning signs in pure English.
As an immigrant who is a truck driver, I have to renew my CDL every year, including TSA background check for hazmat endorsement. And the words Non-citizen are very prominent in my license. So, there we have it. Kind of hard to "fake" it.

I am immigrant too. But I did not cheat on my exam. The persons I mentioned above did.

But where are all of those Somali pirates supposed to work if they're not allowed to drive a truck?

So is it a cdl or cdls? If it’s cdls, how is it plural? How many cdls do you have?

It’s hard to take you serious when you don’t take yourself serious. Nice troll post, but you’re not going to start some mass hysteria here. I don’t know if you noticed or not, but most folks here have been ‘round the block a time or two.

Isn't it up the the employers to make sure that who they hire is legally allowed to drive? And isn't it up to the state to give them that license, after testing? And don't most companies put new cdl grads through a training period, which would mean that trainers have to sign off on their ability? If there are bad companies hiring illegal drivers, is it not our business to report that? If there are drivers on the road who we know to be unqualified, is it not our business to report that? If trainers are signing off on drivers who are dangerous, is that not something we need to report to our bosses? I don't understand how unqualified drivers make it through getting their cdl and a company's training.

And as an immigrant who's doing everything the proper and legal way, I'm guessing it's not free or particularly easy for you to do, it doesn't bother you that somebody coming in illegally, ignoring the laws, maybe no real great grasp of the English language could come in work for half of what you do?

If you gave a truck driver a sack full of gold bars, he'd complain about how heavy it was...
