You do realize that there are other ways to make a much better living in this job than spending weeks on the road, right?o_O

According to insurance statistics the industry is safer today then it was 20,30,40 years ago. So the problem may just be in your own mind?

That article states truck crashes have gone up since 2009 and so have the number of truck occupant deaths.

With more and more people on the road every year. Leads to more stupidity also. I don't see how in the world statistics can go down.

Last month. We surpassed motorcycle deaths from last year. Every year that number gets higher. And the season still has 3 more months.

More miles driven. So you can have an increase in deaths and the overall stats can be lower. Guessing back in 2009 companies were getting rid of the crappy drivers and keeping the good ones do to the recession.

Investigations | Office of Inspector General | U.S. Department of Transportation

These are from last year and before, but the news I hears once again last month another DMV personnel and truck school owners indicted and plead out...Bay Area, Fresno, Modesto and a few other cities....all had middle eastern names not hispanic

They were getting rid of the higher paid drivers and keeping the cheaper labor due to the recession. I was making $20 back then and hours were knocked down in favor of the new guys at the bottom of the pay scale at $13.

Population was also down. Cell phone useage on the highways was a bit lower. And with 25% out of work. Who could afford the bill.

Well the stats show it was one of the safest times to drive. Maybe all the high dollar guys were also the worst drivers.

Absolutely. I have never done the weeks away from home. I was responding to someone stating if you are spending thousands and thousands of miles away from home you should have more hours to work.

I am seeing the industry move away from that. More intermodal(rail and ship), more hubs for relay, more final mile localism jobs that are 4 night away deals. I expect that trend to continue.

stacks, MACK E-6 and otherhalftw Thank this.

Absolutely correct! Regional and local aimed at the "solo" driver and there is still the national (coast to coast) freight that seems to be reserved for teams.
Just listen to the advertising for drivers. Pay increases seemingly every quarter, the push for hometime/home every night. The competition between companies is really getting intense for hiring and retaining drivers.

Maybe someone can come along and tell us how the illuminati and pizzagate will change truck driving for the worse?
