Not my decision. Theres no room for all those straps. They got all those batteries taking up one of the tool compartments for the EPU crap. I agree that you can save a lot of time and trouble taking them off. But I'm trying to find the fastest way to do it the way they want. We do a lot of trailer swapping and etc so I guess thats why... ?
A tool for winding winches with a drill?

Another hand tool for winches... looks kind of silly but looks to work:

I use a bent up piece of bar, spin them around. In the past I did use a 3/8"cordless drill with said allan key. You attach allan key as if a bit, put the tip through the end of the ratchet and back through one of the bar entries. then pull the trigger.
While I agree that it's a lazy way to do it: I pull that iso roofing; so I use all but 4 inches of strap, and at 18 straps plus hand straps, you need to get them all wound up and out of the way quick whilst unloading on a jobsite. Additionally, I'm in the same boat as the OP, I do quite a bit of drop n hook trailers; some are preloaded and tarped. All straps, tarps, bungees stay with the trailer they are on. So taking them off would serve no purpose, as there is not usually a toolbox to put them in on the trailer, and they need to stay with it. Again: it is a lazy way to do it; and it definitely cuts their lifespan. But that's the way it is done on these particular accounts, so I don't have a say in how someone else's equipment gets to be treated when the treatment is demanded.
The strap winder I have is homemade. But the same idea of a tool can be found at almost any truck stop to varying degrees (read cheap chinese junk mostly).mhhousley Thanks this. -
ps i suggested allan key without referencing drills bc you specifically asked regarding drill attachments; sorry for not being clear hahaha sometimes words are in my mind but miss out when the rest hits the page/keyboard

Mommas_money_maker and bullhaulerswife Thank this. -

A friend of mine made a deal for winding with a drill, it is just a piece of 1/4 inch rod with a 90 degree bend on the end. I just called him and he said the only trick to it is to get the right length on the tail, to short it will come out when winding, to long and it might snag something. Also it works best to have a cordless drill with a high / low speed and leave it in low.
I would think the allen wrench would work good if the tail is long enough.
Personally I think the idea this is lazy is ridiculous, unless your one of the over the road guys that take 2 hours to wind straps and roll tarps.
I run short and time is money, pure and simple. -
i have a regular strap winder, it sits in the rub rail and you just crank it, takes 3 sec to roll a strap and they are nice and tight.
American TruckerSHC and Mommas_money_maker Thank this. -
If you had a decent headache rack you could store all the straps, chains and binders so they are easy to get to and also nicely put away. Time is money so the better organized you are, the quicker you can get stuff done without fumbling around for it.
SHC Thanks this.
