Hello everyone. I am not a trucker (yet) but hope to be one after I retire from the Navy this October after 25 good years of serving my country. I've always wanted to be a big rig driver ever since I was a kid hearing my uncle tell stories of his days driving.

I'm so happy I found this site and have been doing a lot of research on the industry and the state of truck driving now but nothing I've read has or will discourage me from at least giving this a shot and seeing how it all works out. I am from Chattanooga, TN and have been seriously thinking of going to US Xpress after I complete school and get my CDL.

Again, I love this site and can't wait to get out there on the road with you guys. Take care everyone and please be safe out there.

Welcome aboard our ship! I'll save all the lifestyle crap of trucking for some other newbie. Sounds like you are used to living in a moving closet! You seem to have a pretty good background, not sure about your MVR. If you have a clean MVR then you should have your choice of companies to choose from. Are you thinking about a school or company school? Personally I would advise you to stay away from the mega-carriers. Not that they are "evil" but your chances of success will be much greater at a small to medium size company. Aim for the companies you see that aren't advertising for drivers as much. This means lower driver turnover rate. Take your time, make yourself a list of your wants and needs and go through the different company websites. You shouldn't be too limited to companies being from the east coast. They love drivers on the east coast! Do your homework. You will get a lot of prehires which really doesn't mean a whole lot so choose wisely. There are also a lot of different divisions of trucking. Some easier to get into than others. Flatbed, dryvan, reefer, heavy haul, tanker, doubles, triples etc... You can most likely get a gig doing tanker or reefer being a newbie. These are going to pay a little more. Personally I like reefer. Flatbed is a lot of manual labor, but that is not always bad when you are sitting for 11hrs a day! I will leave you with a couple sites to check out. You just type in where you live and it will give a list of companies hiring in your area.

    Welcome to the board navyguy!
25 thank you's for serving our country.

I would do your homework on your training. Distance shouldn't be an issue on picking a training company as once you'll start you'll be gone. You're at an age where you could use your GI Bill and go to Chattanooga State instead of getting a 4 year degree. They have a good truck training program. Or you might pass the GI Bill on to a daughter or son if you have one and go the route you are planning. You're first year is tough no matter which company you go with. Covenant Transport is down the road too. I don't know which is best or worst. :) Good luck!

Thanks for your service. I think trucking is a great way to see the country and get paid to do so. If you go into it with knowing you are not going to get rich quick, and that this is not going to be easy but I'm going to try, then you should be okay.

What do you see yourself doing on an average day of trucking and lets see how close you come..

Thanks to everyone for your responses and well wishes. I am really looking forward to getting out and getting into the trucking world. I have read many blogs and know that it's not going to be an easy first year but as I always say; you can't just be flexible, you have to be fluid and go with the flow. BTW CondoCruiser, I did pass my GI Bill on to my daughter who's using it at the University of Louisville now but I didn't know Chatt State had a CDL program so I will definitely check that out. I will keep everyone posted on my progress. Again, thanks to all of you for your responses and the hard work that you do everyday out there on the road...Be safe guys
