I was working for Great Plains Transport and I was loving it. I was a great driver and everyone liked me but last month I had to come home and get my medical card renewed. On my way home I started urinating blood and ended up having to go to the hospital when I got home and found out that I was having kidney problems. I went to get my medical card but my blood pressure was skyrocketed and every time I went back in my blood pressure was too high. After one month I had to be terminated because of DOT law for for not having my medical card and my company said that I could come back as soon as I was better. The company has a program where you have money taken out of your check until you build up $1,000 and if you ever abandoned of truck that takes care of it. My company and I parted on great terms with an offer of employment again but they had to have another driver come to pick up my truck. Will something like that go on my record for abandonment? I asked because I got an email from them today where they use that thousand dollars to cover that driver picking up my truck but it's listed under abandonment. It's not like I just got mad and left a load. My truck was empty and everything was all agreed on.

That is a nice little scam they have going.
Collect a grand from each driver, then collect the interest from it.

I wonder if they actually give it back to the driver at any point.

I just went to their web site.
That is a lot of fluff PR stuff.

To start a simple chat they require your name, phone number and e-mail address.

Escrows are common, some 0/0 companies will use the money in the fuel account to cover the cost of delivery of a load, if something happened to the driver in route.

That’s messed up; getting hit with abandonment even though you were authorized to take it home with you? In a case like this where I driver ends up needing an extended leave an absence, should they attempt to drive their truck back to a yard?

Not for employees, in almost all states that’s illegal.

To the op, that’s not abandonment.

abandonment is when you terminate your employment and leave the truck anywhere where they have to do a recovery of it.

This is a crap company, escrow for an employee needs to be addressed by the state department of labor, they can’t charge you for for damages you do nor can they charge you for any recovery of bag equipment, you should demand all of the money back or get a lawyer to address this.

Crap company aside, which, I don't think they are being unreasonable, this is not abandonment, a medical emergency with proof. Looks like they are willing to work with you. The $1,000 retainer? That's a new one on me, but I could see their side, kind of. Hope you are better, scary stuff, peeing blood.
