If I hear back from them, I'll have to ask a few questions about their current freight load. I.e. Are those trucks hanging out because there's no work for them and the drivers are at home not getting paid (he said that can happen from Dec-Mar) or are they extra/backup trucks?

it shouldnt matter, ak what SEFL pays for overtime after 8/40, and what their pension is like, and how much their health ins costs.

Without any knowledge, I would venture to say that on "overtime after 8/40 a big 0. Pension probably just a 401k with the employee contributing about 80% to the employer's 20%, if that much. Health ins., wouldn't surprise me for a family plan, it is going to be $600 per month or higher.

The days of an employer's pension plan being fully funded by the company are almost gone, with the exception of union companies and union companies also offer some 401k plans along with their company pension. As far as health ins., I could be mistaken, but I know when I was in the Teamsters, 100% of the cost was paid by the company, might be a little different now, but I doubt it.

Yup. As far as I know, you're likely only to get overtime past eight hours with a union company, as working past eight hours is pretty much a given for truck drivers. SEFL has a regular old 401k. They match 50% of the first 4% that the employee contributes (pretty weak). Health insurance for single is something like $25/week. Family...I don't remember (it didn't apply to me, so I didn't pay much attention to it).

With ABF...100% of the health insurance is paid by the union/company (whichever it is). You pay the ~$60/month union dues and get health, dental, and vision coverage. As far as benefits goes, ABF > SEFL.

ABF (now Arcbest ) waited till the vote last year. $30 million into a new HQ ( done ) and new equipment for 2014.
Judy Mcreyonlds ( CEO ) is confident Arcbest will be around a long time.

"ABF" has profits each year with a small workforce.

ABF isn't all disneyland. We gave back some vacation and %. Still one of the best employers for pension / benefits. Ask any UPS employee about TEAMCARE :biggrin_25523:. ABF wages is far behind UPS. Our benefits is better right now.

ETA: We still have 8/OT and PENSION / 100% benefits. 1 year of employment receive ZERO vacation.
We still have a fair wage, 21+hour and "not a mega fleet".

Not a super elite company, but it's difficult to be employed by ABF. a retirement job.

so if you arent going to get any OT, and SEFL only gives you 20 dollars on the 1000 that you make, and you have to pay for bennies, what one would you choose to work at?

i would get plenty of hours, but they don't "pay OT..." As in they don't pay time and a half if you work more than right hours in a given day. Talking to the manager...getting 10+ hours per shift is the norm.

Another thing to look at for ABF is no vacation til after you been there 2yrs. That's a long friggin time without vacation plus I think you only get one week once you get it. Correct me if I'm wrong.
