I applied last Friday but I have not heard anything. Where I live I was told that I would have to leave truck at the Wytheville yard and then drive home. I live in the outskirts of Rocky Mount Va. in the woods as I call it. I don't know what I will do. I was told that even though I have been driving since 96 I would have to have a refresher since I have not been out to left coast or to NYC. I was told possibility of regional can you tell me what that would be for the Wytheville area? Thanks and be safe.

Call in the morning and ask to speak with recruiting. From Wytheville you will be running to OH and IN a lot.

As I understand it, it used to be US Express, but C.R. England bought them out, or bought the yard out, and they begrudgingly allow us to continue using their site for trailer storage.

Apparently they used to let us use the showers there, too, but nowadays they don't even like us using the bathroom there.

    Hello All,

Well, looks like I may well be joining the peanut gallery of the Abilene Drivers Fan Club.

In short, (ya, as if that will happen, right?)

"Abilene is a Good Company with Great Freight and Awesome Equipment!" ... that's what I have said several times over the last year plus of driving and what I will continue to say about Abilene.

I like OTR driving in general and specifically driving for Abilene, but we did have issues with home time from Day One of training... just to be clear, this is NOT an issue with Abilene but rather simply a reality of the OTR Driving "Lifestyle"... it just didn't work for us.

We did attempt to address this by seriously considering Driving as a Team Couple... twice... once last year she was to take a two week vacation to hop on the truck with me with the intention of then giving her two week notice and attending a Community College in NC to get her CDL. That idea was placed on the back burner when she used her vacation to have foot surgery instead and was simultaneously asked to take over her boss's job when he moved within the company. So we moved to Charlotte for her job and to let her foot fully recover.

This year she once again had the first two weeks of January scheduled as vacation with the very same plan to test the waters and then continue with our plan to be a Team Couple.

And yes, once again those plans changed when the Corporate Office requested that she take over her old boss's job back in Boca. Actually we turned them down a few months ago when they first approached her. But then they came back with a redefined position description that was custom created specifically for her... along with a better overall financial package as well.

Yes, they really wanted her in that job.

So since that decision to take that job and move back to Florida, we have been struggling back and forth with the ramifications of that choice as it would now relate to Driving OTR... and decided it was just an aspect of the job that was not compatible with our preferred personal lifestyle.

I gave HR a Staus Update yesterday to that effect and began a discussion of other things that I might be able to do part time remotely for our company... many of these things are issues that we all know the company struggles with... from simple Q & A with the Drivers, to tracking Driver Referrals, to the lack of information flow both to and from the drivers.... along with a few other things that the company might benefit from my experiences prior to Commercial Driving. Plus, I would still be available, if needed, to drive occasionally should Abilene have a free truck and freight to move.... or not drive when freight is tight.

While I do hope something comes of this discussion with the powers that be, knowing how they work with such low overhead in Richmond, and the companies continued aversion to all things related to communications, I rather doubt they will go for it.

So, with that all said, I will end this post and say... "Abilene is a Good Company with Great Freight and Awesome Equipment!"

    Stay Safe,
    MD
