Me and the first mechanic both, apparently. We tried several times over the course of an hour-and-a-half to get that thing started. He'd do something under the hood then ask me to turn the key. Nothing. He'd do something else, ask me to turn the key, nothing.

2nd mechanic shows up, cranks right up. Don't even get the satisfaction of figuring out what was wrong with the thing. 2nd mechanic said the starter sounded fine when it cranked, and he thinks it's probably something wrong with the ignition.

So I dunno. I eagerly look forward to this problem happening again, perhaps while I'm blocking up the guard shack entrance to a shipper or a receiver.

I feel bad for you. Here's what I see in your future. You tell our shop what happened. You get to Richmond. You write your truck up. You set all day til about 7pm and then they finally get your truck into the shop. At midnight, you go to the shop to find out if it's fixed. Mechanic looks at you and says "we couldn't find nothing wrong with it."

You park and go to bed for the night. Next day you arrive at shipper or receiver and turn your truck off. Come back to your truck.....no start. Then you start this process all over again

When a starter is going bad, it will often work when cold. Heat it back up, and they don't work so well.

If you are hearing a click down by the starter when you turn the key but it is not starting, the ignition switch is working. It's tripping the solenoid down below, but the starter is not responding. You can apply a percussion adjustment to the side of the starter while someone else holds the key in start mode, often this will cause it to turn over. Then you know for sure it is faulty.

What kind of truck, how many miles? If it's a Volvo, is the starter still painted green?

If you''re in a Volvo, I bet it's the ignition switch. Had the same problem, shop changed the starter and still didn't start. After changing the ignition switch everything was fine :)
