The split sleeper berth provision is still available under DOT regs. It is restricted to the 8/2 split where the 8 hours must be in the sleeper berth (extends the 14 hour work day limit during this time) and then an additional 2 hours either off duty or sleeper berth again (this time does not extend the 14 hour work day limit).

Some companies have decided to prohibit drivers from utilizing this option (apperently too many drivers dont understand how to use it properly).

The downside to using the split sleeper berth rule is you never get back an entire 14 hour work block or a full 11 hour driving shift UNTIL you get a straight 10 hour break.

That 10 hour consecutive break can be all off duty (line 1), all sleeper berth (line 2), or ANY combination of lines 1 and 2 consecutively that equal 10 hours.

Many drivers confuse the split sleeper berth 8 hour minimum sleeper berth rule as a requirement for ALL 10 hour breaks. The DOT has never mandated "sleep" as part of a 10 hour break.

I've been to Texas twice and Minnesota twice, that's as far west as I've been with Abilene. I was offered a Portland Or last week but the delivery on it was 7 days so I turned it down. I hired on to run all 48, and with the way Abilene burns through my 70 I'm just happy running east of the Rockies. That's not to say if I was offered a west coast load I wouldn't take it, it's just the way I've been running since I've been here I'm doing just fine running the areas I've been to. I've averaged 3000 miles per week even when I go home.

Thanks for taking the time out to write that. It sounds much better in your words then if I tried writing it. I bet if I tried writing it I would have probably put a few drivers into violation!

I got empty in Pompano Beach yesterday morning at 9am. I sent in my empty call and waited to hear back from dispatch. I called my wife to tell her to pick me up at the truck and that we would go out for breakfast. I got back to where I park my truck at 10am and had heard nothing back from Kimberly. I sent her a freeform message and she wrote me back that they were working on it. Ok, I wasn't scheduled for home time so I knew I would be loaded or at least dispatched yesterday. my darling wife was waiting for me as I pulled in then as she was walking towards my truck my Qualcomm went off with a load. I read the message from Will one of our load planners to call this broker for my info and to start heading over to South Bay. That shot my breakfast date with my wife right in the gashole. We ended up having a Dunkin Donuts coffee in the service plaza on the turnpike.

I called the broker to get my load info, I was loading at Dixie Crystals in South Bay going to Front Royal Va for Wednesday morning. I loaded there once before while I was with Calex, that time it took me 5 hours to load. I got there at 12:30 and was loaded at 2pm. I closed my doors, sealed the trailer and then it started to rain, and hasn't stopped yet as I'm sitting here in Front Royal. In fact, I'm surprised my wipers haven't fallen off the truck.

I have home time scheduled for this weekend. It's my wife's birthday so I want to be home to eat some cake with her, some family and friends. I hope to be home by Saturday, unload Monday then head right back out. One of our drivers asked me the other day how old my wife is, I thought that was an inappropriate question, so with the straightest face I could come up with and with all sincerity in my response I told him she's turning 19. He looked at me somewhat dumbfounded, and I told him that it really isn't as bad as it may look, it's only a 38 year difference between us, but we sure are happy.

On that note, say good night JohnBoy.

After starting on paper in 98 this is the first being on this box. I thought it was set up for not being split. Good to know. Still looking for the quarter slot on this this thing so I can get more time on it.

If you go ahead and do a split the computer will automatically do the needed calculations.

Believe me, there are times I'd like to drive down the road with my foot stuck in this thing.
