ok guys i start school in a week and have been reading on this board and a couple others for quite sometime...Abilene and Cargo Transporters have been my top two for quite awhile but now I have met a brother Marine that runs as an O/O in Schneider's Choice program and I have seen his last six weeks settlements. He is knocking down some serious cash averaging between 2500 and 3500 net...can anyone shoot holes in going with Schneider and running for percentage on a lease?? I know the mileage plan is disastrous but this guy, and i have talked to him on the phone often, books his own loads at the rates he is willing to run and stays as busy as he wants. If anyone knows something i am not seeing plz tell me

How much experience did he have before he went Schneider IC is first question
there is a lot to learn driving properly
    managing your hours effectively
I would train with Abilene learn the business before i jump in the deep end

    just my $.02

Someone correct me, but I thought you had to have at least six months experience at SNI before they will consider you for their o/o division unless you have experience.

My advice is to get experience at a company before jumping into a fleece purchase. Nothing wrong with being a company driver for a couple years to gain knowledge and actually focus on learning rather than jumping into a l/p program from the get go.

To the best of my understanding you have to have 1 year OTR with an outside company or 6 months experience as a SNI company driver and then your driver manager has to say that you have the ability to go to the IC program. I know I applied over a year ago and was told no that I did not have the required OTR. Now I have it and have been approved by SNI and SFI (finance department).

I wouldn't lease with anybody until I learned the business, you never know OTR might not be what you think it is. OTR is a way of life that doesn't suit a lot of people, make sure it is what you want to do before jumping into a lease or purchase.

I think this thread has been hijacked by some of us. I don't think it was done intentionally but as being a new driver I would do as everyone suggests go company for a year or two and then if you feel the need to become an o/o or l/o then sit back and evaluate your options. You never know you might just want to be a company driver and there is nothing wrong with that. Abilene is a good place to work according to all the people who work for them. They have great equipment and someone stated they are basically o/o equipped trucks.

I called the company up and talked to one of the bosses I think and he was very nice and answered all my questions and then told me that Abilene would not be for me at that time. But he also informed me that if I decided to go OTR then give him a call and he would have me run with someone just to learn the e-logs. I ended up going with a local company.
